There was a previous thread "Trains through the Airport"  back in 2012, (here is link: https://ogrforum.com/t...614#5653431171680614).  I thought I would create a new thread to share my recent experience of traveling with trains through airports on my return from York.  First, York was a blast! I will create a thread on the York Forum highlighting my first visit there.  I was able to add the York visit in front of a week long Philadelphia-New York business trip.  On my return flight from Newark to Seattle, I was able neatly pack my York haul, into a large suitcase that I checked (not carry on).  All the items arrived, nothing broken, however my bag did get opened and examined by TSA prior to getting put into the plane's cargo bay.  When the TSA does this they place a form letter in your bag.

The item that they carefully opened was the Lionel 726 engine, which I acquired at the York meet (its a beauty, works superbly).  I had acquired repo boxes at York for the engine and tender from East Coast Train parts.  You can see from the pictures, The TSA made double sure that this engine was not going anywhere in the box!

I travel extensively for my job,  and I greatly appreciate the effort that the TSA does to keep our skies safe. I have always been treated with respect by them.

If I had to do this over, I probably would have put the engine in my carry on bag, especially if the box was original, since the TSA tape would have been difficult to remove without marring the cardboard.

I enjoyed reading your post. I also traveled extensively for business and have had many experiences returning from York by air. Anything that I could not carry on, I shipped by UPS (Silver/Blue Halls). But I was able to take most of what I purchased as carry-ons. I always warned the TSA personnel what was going on the belt and never had a problem.
