The Trainsounds tender I picked up last weekend decided to go silent on me. Could being operated by a postwar RW transformer using a zener diode for the whistle circuit have cooked something? When run on a modern Atlas transformer, one can hear faint whistle and bell noises, regardless of volume control or on/off settings.
Any suggestions? I've already reseated the plugs and the sound chip...

Did you try a new speaker? Check all the wires?
Haven't tried a new speaker yet. All the wires seem OK.
Tried a new speaker, same results.
Soldered the wires back to the old speaker and fiddled with the volume control and, mirabile dictu, the little indefinite started working again! 
Mebbe a bad solder joint on the speaker?

Bad or dirty volume control - try a shot of Radio Shack tuner cleaner/lube. It will fix it or fail it. Hopefully, there's a hole in the case.

I second the volume control, that's one of the top suspects. Jim, you will hear very faint sounds even with the volume control disconnected.
I'll pick up some tuner cleaner next time I'm at the Shack and give the pot a treatment. Thanks!

Have you told your doctor?
The lack of crew talk is, indeed, a good sign, as you won't be "doing what the voices tell you to do".
I think Trainsounds needs more crew talk options:
"Here, kitty, kitty."
"Nice kitteh."
"AWRIGHT, CAT, OFF THE @#$#$ TRACKS!!!"
