I do to but regardless theres very few so called deals on there . I find better deals on eBay . On another note when you do bid on a item. It includes the 50cent dash fee and the shipping why not include the 15%? Theres no way everyone knows about the 15% fee.. It will also stop overbidding cause the buyers would know..

I also used to buy from them. I would scan their site every Wednesday modern for anything new added.   A majority of the used locos I bought including my JLC Big Boy and Allegheny I got from them.  But for whatever reason they had to go modern with e-bay: they are probably still good people with a lot of inventory passing through their hands but I haven't bought from them in a year.

Last year when I jumped back into "this."  I bought a Lionel TTUX set off of ebay from them.  It was supposed to be the Chicago Northwestern, thats what was shown in the listing.  It arrived (packaged very well), but was item 6-52041 Burlington Northern with Conrail Mercury Containers.  Not that big of an issue, what was though, was that one of the trucks was completely destroyed and one container corner was smashed a little.  There was no box damage so it was obviously put in like that.  After contacting trains, they told me to "check the price for replacement parts, if affordable we will replace.  If not, send back for a full refund."  I found some "new" trucks on ebay I think and I gave them an estimate of $20 (I think) and I paid $47 for the TTUX.  They deemed that price way too high, had me send it back and they gave me a full refund.

With that, their listing was incorrect, but I can't say that I was not happy with their customer service.  (Not sure I'd buy from them again though)

When you're in business you have to go where the money is or cease to exist. I'm sure trainz is making more money with their current business model than they were before, so it is not likely they will ever go back to the way it was. "Auction fever" does garner higher prices generally speaking.

If they lose a few customers along the way, I'm sure they are more than making up for it by other customers they've gained through the wider exposure. A wise man once said, "You can't please everyone."

It makes no sense to remain angry at them and expend energy badmouthing them; if you do not like their business model, then do not do business with them. They are not cheating anyone, their terms are there in black and white, and they obviously own up to mistakes and make good when the product is not delivered in good condition.

I got a box from Trainz last night of a lot of cars I bought on eBay.

One trolley car was double boxed, but with no packing material in its box so it rattled about on its trip to my porch.  Minor damage that I have little problem with attending to and reasonable as well.

3 cars directly bubble wrapped - nothing significant in damage there.

Wooden trolley was just in the box with the styrofoam peanuts - it'll take a modest rebuild except part of the observation railing is missing.

Exacta kit car was just loose in the box with the styrofoam peanuts and it was reduced back to a kit.  Had to sift through all of the peanuts to find all of the interior details.

Lastly, there was a Robico kit car was just loose in the box with the styrofoam peanuts and was crushed, baasically reduced to wood and metal castings

These people simply have no idea how to properly pack anything for shipping. If they would have at least bubble wrapped the loose cars, much of the damage would have been eliminated.  Too lazy, too cheap, too much volume, or whatever the excuse might be...........

Fortunately, this is damage that I can handle and restoration that I can do, and the Robico car parts are useful as masters for re-casting parts.  Best of all is that one of the cars that was bubble wrapped (interior parts broken loose) is another very well assembled Exacta car that is a true gem.

I have purchased three 3rd Rail locomotives from Trainz.  I only have one of them as the other two got trashed in shipping due to poor packaging.  The second one was a real raindance to get a refund on, and I was reluctant to buy the third one, but I really wanted it.  I think they finally got the word as it was double boxed with lots of padding.  It also arrived without a scratch.  FINALLY!

Another guy in our club bought a 4-4-2 Atlantic 3rd Rail from them, it came in a small box just tossed in with some peanuts!  Needless to say, it was literally destroyed in the shipping process!

Our speculation is that much of the stuff is on consignment and the boys and girls that do the packing simply don't give a hoot how well it's packet.  I can't imagine any other reason that amount of poor packaging.  I have shipped hundreds of train items, I've only had a couple get damaged in shipment, and that was not due to poor packaging.

mwb,  my experience as well.  Also, the descriptions of items for sale are often bizarre and/or completely wrong.  I think it's just a matter of the people writing the copy and packing the trains being unfamiliar with trains.

There's a lot of specialized knowledge that we have but that we take for granted; the average retail worker wouldn't know.  I wish they would upgrade their training a little, it would make all the difference.  I also have stopped ordering from them, every order arrived either damaged or not what was advertised.

Such a difference when you buy from a forum member or another "train person":  I frequently buy from one forum member in particular and the packing is so careful, it's a work of art in itself; the carton could be mishandled every which way and the contents would still be untouched!

What I don't like about their auctions are they don't test anything. I mean come on Trainz, set up a photo shoot for the particular item but not throw them on a test track to see if the thing works? How long could it possibly take to check out the chronometer/ odometer with DCS...assuming it's a MTH PS2 equipped loco. But they will state item was checked by service dept and for some extra $$$ we'll check it out under DCS for you..thanks but no thanks.
