I picked up an Weaver PS2 covered hopper, I think it is an older version. It came with 2 rail trucks and couplers that are similar to Kadee. The car came in a white Weaver box with a red stripe.

Wanting to use this on my 3 rail layout, I can not find any trucks that will fit this car. I have a pair of Lionel and MTH trucks, but the car rides way too high.

Has anyone used 3 rail trucks on these cars and if so, which one? Or do I need to modify the mounting pad?

Thanks

Weaver sells die-cast three-rail trucks with couplers that are a direct fit. They're sprung and will add weight to the car (which they need). The car will ride higher by about 1/8", though.

I'm not sure if the Atlas truck will fit, but if it does, the ride height won't increase by as much. The Lionel and MTH trucks add about 1/4" to the height of a Weaver car because of how the mountings are done.

Hope this helps.

The plastic trucks are just fine; the plastic couplers are poor performers (won't open

far enough to uncouple well; plastic spring breaks - won't open without help) but they are good enough to get your car on the 3-rail road - and sometimes they actually work. I

just treat them like dummies.

Da Bay is a good source of various parts and such - including couplers and trucks. The later Lionel, Atlas, RMT (K-line) and MTH trucks tend to have low(er) bolsters so the ride

height issue is lessened or disappears.

But Weaver fits Weaver.

I have some older Weaver freight cars that I bought about 15 years ago that would never work with any other brand of rolling stock. I have read this post and am wondering if I weighted these cars, would they work correctly with Lionel and MTH in O gauge? I hate to keep these setting on a side track or on a shelf. Even have the Old Reading Beer hopper cars from Weaver's special run about 8 or 9 years ago, never ran these, only have them on a shelf. Would love to add the Old Reading Beer cars to a train with MTH Reading & Northern quad hoppers
