To me the TTG on the NYC was reversed from what other railroads used. Other than the usual "They wanted to." was there any reason?

To me the TTG on the NYC was reversed from what other railroads used. Other than the usual "They wanted to." was there any reason?
Actually they did it both ways on the 20th Century cars. 1938-1948 were light gray cars with dark gray window stripe. In 1948 the colors were reversed.

Why yes... Yes there were. They were unofficially called "Beauty Queens". Note the high waisted stripes (above the number boards) and staggered whiskers in the opposite direction.
There's a great shot of them leaving LaSalle Street Station in "The Water Level Route" at 25:06... Note the high-gloss paint!
