The pedestrian/bicycle tunnel under the NS track that runs through Goshen College in Goshen, IN, will be completed in the 24 hour frame afforded the college and city by NS.  NS will only halt trains on two days a year -- Christmas and July 4th.  Today at midnight the construction began.  I just came from the sight a few minutes ago.  The ballast has been put down and the section of rail which had been removed -- cut and simply pulled ties and all down the line over the exisating rail has been pulled back in place.  It reminded me of how we cut out a section of our 0 gauge track with a dremmel and lay it aside to work on something.  Congratulations to the college and city planners, the construction crews and of course the railroad crews.  A fun and unususal 4th, especially since we are under a no-fire ( hence no fireworks) ban because of the drought and heat.  To see the final stages and the many pictures, blogs and live webcam Google "Goshen College tunnel project".
