Afternoon all,

I've read that FasTrack switches have the best anti-derail capability, and that the manual ones can be operated faithfully by the engine forcing it to throw if it's not in the needed position.

I have gargraves track, I'm wondering if Ross switches can be used similarly

Will an approaching engine be able to reliably force the throw, or do you HAVE to wire up a switch motor and utilize block control to get it to throw to prevent derailment?

I want to add reversing loop to the Under the Tree layout

Thanks,

Buck

My limited experience with the manual fastrack anti- derail function is that the train will push through the switch if set for the other track but doesn't lock it in place.

I would not trust it to be "set" to the direction you just came from for entering the switch if you now want to enter the switch and go straight or turn out, like on a reverse loop.

With that said, with adjusting the tension on the ross switches you may be able to do the same, but I'd want them to be wired to ensure a positive direction setting before entering from the single track direction.

For Ross switches, it's the switch machine in use that determines how the non-derailing function works.  I use the Z-Stuff DZ-2500 switch machines, and they have non-derailing inputs.  You have to wire from the two inside entry rails (red arrows) to the proper connections on the switch machine and the job is done.

My experience with the manual FasTrack anti-derail function is that the train will push through the switch, and the over-centering spring locks it in place for the next round through the reverse loop in the opposite direction. This is by design... here is a FasTrack reverse loop layout in operation:

Ross switches can maybe be modified to work similarly, but not so sure a tree layout would be the best venue. Here is one method:
