This worked on my TWs after I removed the rectifier disc. The grey side gets soldered to the post in the middle and you do not have to remove the top.

Hi Bill:
I have a TW transformer.
Since I am electrically challenged, what does adding the diode do and what is its purpose and is this something I should consider having done in the future?
Thanks
George
Bill, what are the specifications for the diode ? Thank you, Jim Cotter.
Looks like he used a standard 6A silicon diode. It replaces the selenium rectifier.
Thanks John ! Jim Cotter.
Just pry off the speed nut from the round rectifier and solder one of these diodes in place. Grey side toward the copper tab and black side on the rectifier. Available from Davis Lyons emial is help@lioneltranformer.com.

What are "these" diodes? The diode shown above is a standard 6 amp silicon diode, what are you suggesting?
Don't know what the specifications are but they are available form Davis Lyons.help@lioneltranformer.com
Make that black side on the rectifier bracket.
Since you can buy the one illustrated for peanuts from a variety of sources, I don't know why I'd be looking for one that has no specifications.
Here's five for $2.79, and these are 10A diodes, free shipping from a US seller, eBay: 272109315240
You can have these in a few days, and you have enough for a few transformers.
Have some already, thanks though.
