What would have been the typical transformer used on a small layout in 1941? One someone that just bought a PRR B6 set might have also bought along with track. Mike the Aspie

The Type Q is very similar to the RW that I have. Thanks for posting the picture, that is what I was looking for but couldn't find. I think the RW will be close enough and I already have a decent one. Now to find enough of the rubber roadbed to get the noise to something I can tollerate better.
If its any help, in all the years I've been into Lionel trains, I do not recall seeing any "Q" transformers, other than the one I have. It came in a lot of trains I purchased from the original owner. It was a 1945 224 sef with a number of marx accessories and a large amount of track.
I think I've seen a lot more "R" transformers.
A Z would be perfect.
If I had the layout for a Z that is. I dont. I will have one train running around a single track loop, so that would be massive overkill again. I will probably just use the RW that I already have, it has the styling of the R and Q.
AD,
Nothing wrong with over kill what so ever, as long as you have the room for the Transformer!

Old ZW's make great looking and operating Christmas layouts, for under the tree.

I can use the space for the angled street and the RW looks better up on the table. The under tree loop uses my father's 1041 that I rebuilt last fall, along with his complete original 1423w set. I can use the funds from the ZW to buy the rubber roadbed I want to use under the track for noise abatement. Going to pickup gloss white paint this week at Lowes and glitter from Hobby Lobby. Supposed to be nice on Friday so I can open the train room window and paint the table top. Mike the Aspie
I have two Vs and one RW for lights, etc. The Vs are really good,
In 1941, when you bought your set, maybe you picked up a Q or a W. Several years later, after the war in 1948, it was time to upgrade. So, you bought the newly released RW!
With 110 watts, that RW should work just fine for what you are trying to do.
