That was one of the worst “interviews” I’ve ever watched. Stilted, fake and plastic delivery with no warmth and not much knowledge. And then there was the reporter...

UPP 4018 has to be able to RUN first.  Do not put the caboose before the locomotive!  (Cart before the horse!)

And it might have been cheaper to build a CP JUPITER and UP 119 trainsets.  Was not the line to the Gold Spike site taken out before the 4000 class even got to the UP?

Opened in 1904. Replaced by fill in 1950.

This is a link to a recent update about the Big Boy 4014 restoration and in this video Ed Dickens does spell out some of the investments UP has made to their steam shop with equipment and tooling (@ 5:50).  But he fails to mention their new crane!

I believe the restoration of 4014 and the related steam shop upgrades DO bode well for steam in America's future.

Like many steam engine enthusiast on this and other train forums I'm looking forward to the big day the UP Big Boy finally moves under its own steam. Restoration on any steam engine is both very time consuming and horribly expensive so UP's corporate commitment to returning the Big Boy to operation is a somewhat unusual goal for them to commit to. Yes it will garner UP a lot of good publicity especially in light of their ongoing business of transporting huge quantities of coal to major energy producers in the eastern part of the county. Not a bad business strategy for them to persue but steam engine restoration ain't cheap. That aside, restoring any steam engine is a major commitment regardless of who is in charge so Ed Dirksen and his teams involvement is of little or no concern to me. Previous comments about who's doing what, when, and where the parts are coming from are a minor side show in the grand scheme of things. However I must admit I'm a little bit nervous about them completing the task next year given the degree of complexity involved.

For me the far bigger and more important question is will they get the job done and will it be completed on time - I for one certainly hope so!

  Looking forward to seeing the real thing Friday afternoon.

Because I'm in the media business, I had to Google the "reporter".  I was shocked to learn that she's an actual TV reporter working for an actual TV station.  This was an actual news story!  She may look like a college intern doing a promotional video for the UP... but this was the real deal...

I'm at a loss...  but as Rich often says...

No need to use Google, they announced who she was on the night of the live broadcast. She has her own page on the KGWN CBS Channel 5.

Career highlights:

(1)  Graduate of the  University of Colorado,

(2) Danielle travelled with Semester at Sea and moved to Hong Kong shortly after. During her travels, she spent every chance she had traveling to schools around the world, which is how she realized she wanted to pursue a career that could tell the stories of those who may otherwise not have a voice.

(3)  Danielle worked as a reporter at KGNW Community Public Radio, covering local stories in Boulder. She also worked as an Assistant Producer for the Pac-12 Network and enjoyed covering the Colorado Buffalos football and basketball.

(4)  In Malaysia to put her journalism skills to work and give a voice to the endangered sea turtles and marine life in the Perhentian Islands.

(5)  Before moving here to Cheyenne, she worked for the Fox News Network in New York City- reminding her of her love for politics and foreign affairs.

I am sure her mother, father, sister and brothers are very proud of their sister.

Live Facebook is a new medium and yes I was more disappointed with the sound and videography because the camera was in the vertical position.

Just a speculation: Cheyenne is not a very large city so maybe Ed met Danielle at church or a loco super market. They struck up a conversation and we got Facebook Live.

I live in the New York City TV market, and don't remember ever seeing her on-air at FOX. She's green.

Can't say I would do any better. And listening to some of the talking heads on TV she is far, far, far from the worst, even just this year. We don't know what she was asked to do nor the time she was given to prepare for the segment. (Like "Boggity, Boogity, Boogity let's go racin' boys?" How does that guy still have a job?) 

Be glad it made TV news and that UP is willing to spend shareholders money to restore it though it is a drop in the bucket of their spending. After having the public mistake our FEF-3 for a Challenger at train shows I doubt the public will truly notice the difference between it and the 3985. Unless some foamer starts talking. Bet hardly anyone would notice if you switched the signs between a B-25 and a B-26 at an airshow, even with the obvious difference.

Maybe she meant "The U.P. Steam Roller Tour"...which it certainly is going to be when the U.P. proves the naysayers wrong...again!

Definitely a better reporter for the job.  While there wasn't much new information, it looked less like an audition reel than the last.

Just watched the latest vid - well done for what it is - information for the masses.

I really hope they succeed with 4014 - to be honest I get fed up with those who always have some criticism or other  - we don't live in a perfect world but lets just wait and see.

Here in the UK we have the gloom and doom merchants but still we keep fixing up engines and building new ones - OK not as big but the list of restored or new build steam in the UK is a very very long one!!

From other threads on this board, UP is having some service issues.......I hope I do not see blowback on this.....  I could see on the nightly news nationally a UP customer saying his or her company cannot get good service, yet UP spends millions on ancient steam engine.  A neative message almost impossible to "manage".

Did you all catch the brief shot of the spike maul?  Definitely a nice touch!

Cant wait until this engine is done, I plan to go out and see it.

If I am reading it correctly, it looks like 4014 received a new smokebox door in 1956.

I wonder if Vegas is taking bets on wether this engine will be on it own power for Transcontinental Day next year.  If one can bet on horses, dogs, and sports....!

Too bad we cannot have a Big Boy vs C&O H8 "tractor pull" or like contest. And to make it fair, half would be on the UP, half on CSX........Never mind, never would happen on the eastern end!
