I was just reading Clem's York Primer, and noticed that Bruce Greenberg wants to photograph unusual prewar Lionel O gauge. This got me thinking about my Grandpa's 654 Tank car. Grandpa got this new for Christmas, and only the engine ever went away for repairs (got a wheel replaced in 1940, Great-Grandpa liked to crash it), so I know it's original. Anyway, it's the trim. The handrail, ladder (only one, the other is missing, probably from one of Great-Grandpa's crashes), and domes are brass, but the handrail holds and the journals are nickel. Actually, the whole set is nickel journals and brass trim. Would this be considered unusual? I'm not asking if it's photo-worthy unusual (though if you think I should take it with me to York, let me know), but is this something that Lionel did to use the parts up, or is this a truly odd set?

Not really there is 3 different ones that they made all 654 the aluminum you have, (and they made it with nickle and some with brass handrails the ) also orange the 3rd one is grey I have 2 of those but in fair condition at best and the grey is a little more desirable I guess as it carries a little higher value in the pocket guide.

with that said your car looks great. You could check with www.ttender.com or Olsens trains to see about getting the parts you need to complete it.
