How can 844 operate? Who insures the Denver Post excursion? UP? So Amtrak is not involved at all. I guess unless 261 is able to operate its Duluth excursion that will be the only mainline steam excursion this year on one of the big four railroads. Is there Amtrak service from Harrisburg, PA to Chicago and Chicago to Denver? Just curious even though we couldn’t do that for various reasons.

UP operates on its own track hence a lot of restrictions/issues don’t apply. Others will have to chime in with answers to your other questions.

Yes to your question concerning Amtrak service from Harrisburg. You’d need to take the Pennsylvanian to Pittsburgh, connect to the Capitol Limited to Chicago; then connect with the California Zephyr from Chicago to Denver.
