The UP Mike shown above is not a USRA Mikado, which is what Lionel (K-Line) has offered frequently lately (Light, and Heavy w/new boiler tooling).

The photo shows a UP Mikado design, class MK-3.

3rd Rail has offered a class MK-? (I forget precisely which class) with the proper V'bilt tender, very much like the loco in the photo. They show up on eBay occasionally.

steamlocomotive.com has a bunch of answers to steam questions.

Well, I guess that puts an end to that.  Dang, wish they would have put that tender behind the light Mike.

You might want to do some additional research on Union Pacific "MacArthur" class 2-8-2 locomotives. I believe there were Harriman Design, as were their Pacific class locomotives, thus not being "heavy" nor "light" but "Harriman" design. On the UP, they were NOT referred to as "Mikado", and there is even a vary famous letter exchange between the UP and General Douglas MacArthur, when the UP formally requested that their "Mikado" class steam locomotives be changed the the General's famous last name, i.e.the "MacArthur Class" of 2-8-2s.

The Sunset UP MacArthur was a "Harriman Standard" MacArthur and was very close to the SP / T&NO "Harriman" Mikado. With a couple modifications done to it she could have been painted as Austin, Texas' T&NO #786 which is slowly being restored back to service. Wish Sunset or someone would make a T&NO Mike.

Below is my dad's Sunset UP MacArthur in action on the Austin Tinplate Trackers Layout about 10 years ago. Dad sold his to another member of the club who is currently converting it to 2 rail. Also below is T&NO#786 at Cedar Park in excursion service.

Harriman Standard Mikados have been made in O Scale.  Sunsets is the least obscure.  You can buy a kit right now from Stevenson Preservation.  I own four Lobaugh and two scratchbuilt SP Harriman Mikes.  Beaver Creek did one, I think, and Ray Waller did a few.

I sort of fell in love with 786 while on layover in Austin.  It was deteriorating in front of a firehouse, and I managed to take a lot of notes and dimensions.  I seem to be particularly fixated on that Hodges trailing truck.

On the UP - get Kratville's book.  You are lucky to be modeling in tinplate; you can marry almost anything and still be semi-realistic.  We two-railers can get in a snit over wheel width!

Photo forthcoming.

Jim's collection was eclectic - he had Overland and Williams light mikes.  I think he was impressed with the Williams; he sent me one as a gift decades ago.

He was trying to keep everybody employed - he would send models out for modification.  I bet the one you missed was a modified Williams.  He was buying them by the case.

Amazing coincidence.  I just listed on eBay the very same 3 rail Sunset 3rd Rail UP Mikado (MacArthur) #2260 that Ricky/Texas Eagle 77 covered above and which I purchased from his dad along with it's brother #2255 back when I was into 3 Rail Scale.  The subsequent posting has excellent pictures of Sunset's #2260, too.  I had plans to double head them but I switched to 2 rail a while back and am now playing "small ball" on my 2 rail layout with shorter consists.  So, I only want to keep one of these nice locomotives.

I'm  in the middle of converting #2255 to 2 Rail using original Sunset 3rd rail engine/tender wheelsets/drivers, etc.   It's going great.  With the 2 rail drivers and side rods only installed it starts off at a very, very low rotation rate/speed and only a fraction of an amp draw on my RR Ampmeter.  Smooth and quiet.  I can clearly see it's gonna be a really good runner when complete.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in owning the #2260 Sunset 3rd Rail Mikado in it's present 3 rail configuration or in 2 railing it please check it out on eBay and contact me off list for a direct purchase.
