Odd, Website and Posted Manual for it say PS3.

Also all engines shipped for some time now are PS3, so why would they put PS2 in this one?

I note this one has 4 !!! motors in it. Perhaps this has something to do with it.

Should pull a ton.

The old PS3 announcement says different added effects in different engines, so that is hard to nail down other than also having DCC.

From an operating standpoint, how would one tell the difference? Do the PS-3 models have more "features" than the PS-2 models?

The PS3 sounds sets seem to be better (depends on the engine) no battery, updated electronics

Russell, hopefully that is correct then, I saw PS2 listed on Charlies and one other website and was left wondering

Tom,

I hoping to get mine soon.  I found out direct from MTH that it is Proto 3.0.  I don't believe there are any new details.  I'm planning on lowering it and fixing the pilot unless its not possible for some reason.  I've really been looking forward to it and have been watching lots of real footage.  I'll post photos when I get it.

WHOA! Put down the Moto-Tool and step away from the locomotive!

The actual Veranda Turbine had swinging pilots; it has four trucks which are mounted

in pairs on swinging bolsters.

"Swinging pilots" were not that uncommon in the real world; some locomotive architecture called for it (see PRR GG1, for example).

The "gap"? Well, there's the rub. Wasn't very large in the real world.

PS2/PS3...feh; mine's Lionel.

D500,

Lol.  Ok..ok..I'm putting it down!

Thanks for the info but I have been studying it and I know it has a swinging pilot, but it swings too much.  Think of it as a "fixed" swinging pilot.  The main goal is to remove the gap which is way too high.  It looks likes its pulling up its pants in high water.  From what I can see the bolster is adding most of gap which looks like about 2 scale feet.  If I remove it I would have to remove the swinging pilot unless I can mount it to the front truck.  It looks better fixed anyway.  Even though the real one swung, it barely moved because of the wide curves.  I'm just trying to emulate that.  I may end up only putting on a scale coupler.  I may try to add some details.  It will be fun.

I had both the Lionel and an earlier MTH version.  They were both quite nice.  On balance I liked the Lionel a bit better because of the cast metal shell and its weight.  it had only two motors but it would out-pull the four-motored MTH.

Anyway, when the electronics went south on the MTH, after trying several times to repair, I consigned it to the parts bin.  Now, since I have the Lionel,  I will not get this newer MTH, but I have ordered the propane turbine from the latest catalog.
