Interesting to see the photos on there! Amazing seeing that gorgeous steel work that hadn't seen the light of day in ages!
Were these frames Commonwealth one-piece bed castings with integral cylinders?

No, and yes. The frame castings, as well as all major casting, were supplied by General Steel Castings of Granite City, Ill.. Both the main (rear) frame and the front engine frame were one piece castings, with integral cylinders & valves.
HOT WATER: THANK YOU, sir!
Thanx for the update.
Quite a project! I hope it really does run in 2019.
Rotten pipes? Made of wood?
I'm really interested to see how they're going to do the oil conversion. Arrangement of fire bricks, burner(s), and drafting etc. An overwhelming amount of work needs to be done to make this engine operable and reliable.

Rusted out more than likely by a variety of corrosive compounds as well. Those pipes were sitting in cinders and ash that contain chemicals that when mixed with moisture, are corrosive, both salts and likely more alkaline compounds that are found in ash. The steel ends up crumbling away, what was once a strong tube could potentially be riddled with holes or be so weak it could be crushed by hand.
Is UP getting outside help on this?

Not yet. However, all the driver wheel/axle sets have been shipped to the Strasburg Steam shop for complete wheel/tire work.
Was it normal practice to run those steam and air lines inside of the frame? Would seem to be a real maintenance or repair headache.

Good to hear that UP is now the only US class 1 railroad with a steam program but they only have one excursion this year. 844 from Denver to Cheyenne July 31. I guess all of us east of Chicago can just suck it or go to Chattanooga or Reading/Port Clinton, PA for long steam excursions. Who here is actually flying (or Amtraking) out to Denver to ride behind 844?
