I updated my TIU and Remote to software version 6.1 from 5.0. The only trouble I really had was the remote software upgrade kept looking for a Com Port but eventually found one. I checked both units and I got that they were both upgrade to 6.1. When I hooked them back to my layout they failed to work properly. The variable outputs allowed no voltage through and the fixed channels did not send the control signal to the engines. I reset both the TIU and the Remote. By resetting I lost all the stored engines in the remote but I figured I could add them back in later. The reset failed to clear any of the problems up. For information the TIU is a Rev 13A or I3A depending how you interpret the first symbol. The update was done via RS232 port connected via USB converter. Any help would be appreciated.

That is a very old tiu do you have another one to try preferably rev L newer one? also check your tiu red led it should blink once on power up and the remote has to be set to one the same address to be able to talk to your tiu they both must be on the same address tiu and remote!!!! if that don't work try a different tiu or borrow one! also did you set the dcs to fixed 1 or fixed 2 if not there will be no watchdog signal and the engine will start up like its in conventional mode no watchdog!
p.s. also when yo ask remote to find tiu does it come back and say found tiu 1?

You didn't say if the update went seamlessly and completed without error. If anything odd happened during the update, try doing the update again.
You state you have a Rev I3A TIU. If I remember correctly the I3A had a signal problem, a resistor had to added internally to fix the problem. If your I3A was fixed, it should have a "small silver dot" after the letter A. This would not account for all the problems you are describing, but you said it was not working properly, maybe signal strength could be one of your issues.
In answer to the questions: There was no problem updating the TIU, However, the Remote update had a problem finding a COM Port but it eventually did and appeared to update properly. As for the small silver dot there is no dot after the A but one appears above the right leg of the V. Running under Version 5 I had no signal problems on my layout. I will attempt to reinstall version 6.1 some time today. Thanks for the help. I will keep you informed of the results of the reinstall of the software.
I reinstalled the 6.1 software and again no joy. There were no problems but the remote install had a bit of trouble finding the COM PORT. Fixed worked and variable are dead. I checked all the fuses to make sure that they were not blown. When I punch the track button and set the TIU tracks to all I get a (Z) when I set it to any voltage. Have no idea what that means.

According to Barry’s book Appendix A, Z means “Z4K Track is being controlled”.....whatever the heck that means.....I’ve never used tracks in DCS. I just set all tracks to Fixed and put a full 18 volts to all tracks. I do not use Variable. If I run conventional, because everything is set to Fixed, I just use the transformer handles and not the remote.
I'm at a loss, how about trying to revert to the earlier version and see if that changes things?
Gunner: I'm going back to 5.0 and see what happens tomorrow. MEMRO50: Z4K was I believe the predecessor to the TIU, with a very simplified remote you could control the a MTH Engine with not all the Bells and Whistles of the current control system. I do not know if the current version of Barry's book has a picture but the earlier editions did.
Actually, the Z4K is using the Z-4002 Receiver to control a Z-4000 transformer through the remote.
So this worked fine before updating? After updating it stopped working? Power up and watch TIU LED. How many times does it flash and does it stay on after that. I would go into DCS menu and AON for DCS. Then Make sure you wired back in to layout correctly. Red to center rail.
How are you powering TIU on layout. Software should not have done this. G
To All,
Reinstalled the Version 5.0 Software and everything is working as before. I guess the 6.1 version will not work with this older TIU. I have no idea when the I13A or 13A was produced since MTH doesn't appear to list the production dates for the TIU's.
GGG. The TIU light blinked once I believe and I'm using auxiliary power to the TIU. The remote and the TIU appeared to be talking to each other. I wired the setup the same way that I had it wired for 5.0 and rewired it the same way when I reinstalled 5.0. As for powering the layout a Z-4000 and an old ZW. Like Gunner I'm at a lost why this happened.
I installed version 6.1 on a original G TIU without issue. You might want to retry the upgrade again.
I'd download the upgrade again, 6.1 should work on any TIU ever made. You may have a corrupt copy.
I'll wait a while before trying it again and download new version of 6.1.
I downloaded a new copy of 6.1 and reloaded to the system. The system is working properly. I guess some how the original download was corrupted.
Makes sense, I've upgraded pretty much every version of the TIU to 6.1 and never seen an issue like this.
