Southern Mikado

With the somewhat waning chances of Lionel reissuing the Southern 4501 Mikado with Legacy and whistle steam (at least not without being close to $1500 or more ), I have been kind of itching to get my 18018 model from 1992 the full Command Control treatment. This will be quite a challenge, but I know there are plenty of awesome guys like Alex M who work their magic giving conventional engines the full Command treatment.

For this guy, this includes getting these things in it:

  • Command Control
  • Updated sound system
  • Speed control
  • Better smoke unit (since this has the postwar-style puffer type)

Now, here's where things get flip floppy.

I did want to get improved sounds that do sound relatively accurate to the real 4501. I figured MTH's PS2/3 upgrades would allow more leeway to that, but they're definitely not as easy to get as ERR upgrades.

On the other hand, ERR has a good selection of sound upgrades, but not a great one. Browsing their selection of sound cards, the Daylight one sounds the closest in my opinion to the 4501, at least for overall enjoyment. Unless there are OTHER sound cards that I haven't heard of...

Any feedback, help or tips in both picking up upgrade parts, doing upgrade work, and finding overall best upgrade sounds are always welcome, guys.

I still have PS/2 upgrade kits in stock, as well as several of the new (but with the same capability) PS/3 upgrade kits.  For smoke upgrades I use the MTH smoke units, a perfect match for the PS2/3 board sets.

You can also upgrade to ERR Cruise Commander and RailSounds Commander.  For those I also use the MTH smoke unit and my Super-Chuffer to enhance the smoke performance and lighting.

Thanks for the advice John.

It probably shouldn't matter, but will it if it's a PS1 vs. a PS2 smoke unit? I know that you really just have to solder the two pairs of ends on the board together if you upgrade from 1 to 2, or for synchronized puffs.

The ERR kits also include an electro-coupler for the tender, or are they all sold separately?

Ethan, I can certainly do the upgrade.

As for your ability to do it, I think you'd have to answer that question yourself.  Here's a link to the installation manuals for the PS/2 and PS/3 steam.  Replacing the smoke unit involves making a mounting bracket and extending the stack to mate with the boiler stack.  See what you think.
