I deleted the engine from my remote and then tried to reinstall it. The remote said no engine to add and when I tried to recover the engine it said no engine recovered. The marker lights and the firebox light up but that is all Also the remote when turned on has a (L) and a scale speed of over 100 mph's. I turn the speed down to 18 to 20 or 0 mph's. The other engines appear to respond to the remote.

L is usually for lash-up. What engine if any is shown with (L) and 100 mphs?. is there also an ID number?
We don't know what version of the software you're using but if you have any lash-ups move them to a different address, That might help. Using a programming track or equivalent is a must for adding engines or having just the engine you're trying to add receiving power. Everything else should be off the track or parked on dead tracks. Maybe also cycle tiu & remote power.
I recycled both the remote and TIU. I'm using version 5.0 of the software. The (L) has disappeared and the speed is now 0 mph's after I recycled the remote and the TIU. Neither recover engine or add engine worked.
I don't know if you would consider a remote reset depending how much you have entered , everything will be deleted but will give you a clean slate to start over and eliminate any ID conflicts (if any) .
I believe your engine should not be starting up with any lights. so before resetting the remote maybe set up small test track hooked to fixed 1 and try if you can get the engine to remain dark & silent. If so try adding here.
I'm guessing that it remains quiet when power is applied by your description. I'm guessing that you have the track turned up. So it should click when power is applied?
Have U tried running it in conventional mode? Have U tried wiggling the tether? Do U have a meter and could test for power under the shell?
There is some bug that has a preset speed like that but I'm just guessing about that. I have seen it myself.
I reset the remote and TIU again. It will not run in conventional mode. I do hear a very soft click when I turn on the power. I removed the tether and reconnected it. The running lights and the firebox still light, Still no joy in recovering the engine or adding it. The voltage was 20V and I was going through fixed 1.
hi have you tried a conventional reset that might fix your problem power up without tiu and bring voltage up to 9 to 10 volts rhen try 1W and 5 B IN 1/2 SECEOND intervals you should getv2 whistle toots if the board reset if that happens then try to run in conventional mode transformer only' hope your using a mth z4000 transformer. let us know what happens ok glad to help you if need be send me an email with your phone number and I'll call you and try to help!
P.S. I ALSO do repairs if you need that too!

The soft relay click is a good sign, who ever did the upgrade may have hard wired the running /fire box lights.
Can you find a spot on the layout with a perfect dcs signal and try adding with no other engines on the track.
When you say it will not run in conventional, does that mean no sounds or lights or it just won't move? Coui;ld be a battery issue in conventional if it just won't move.
If the engine will not run in conventional mode, you have a problem. If it doesn't start up, you can't do a conventional reset. You may have a bad audio amp, or some other hardware issue. It would be best to send to a MTH Tech to diagnose. G
I charged the battery last night and this morning after a few on and off of the throttle it started smoking and would run conventional. When I tried to recover the engine after I turned the power off and on it just set there and again did not react at all except to have the marker lights and firebox lights on. Could it be the battery?

Things are looking up a little... I don't think it's the battery , A good battery is required to get the engine out of neutral in conventional. since it runs in conventional ,probably not the battery.
The only thing I can suggest is... Try a different Tiu channel keeping in mind the tiu needs power to fixed 1 or an aux power supply to function.....
I'm wondering if who ever did the upgrade used the original constant voltage circuit with out a choke which could cause signal interference...
Since you can't find the engine a conventional reset is about all you have to work with. Did you get sounds in conventional as well?
I forgot to mention that after it worked in conventional with sound and smoke I turned off the power and tried it again it just stood there with the marker lights and firebox lights on. I also in order to make sure the battery was not the problem I replaced the battery with a BCR 2.

So close... I don't know what the next move is... good luck.
Do you have loose plugs n board? Dirty wheels and pickups, bad pickup wires? Sounds like unreliable AC power getting to board. So you can have bad tether or bad connection at engine PCB. Pins may need to be resoldered. G
A last thought .... engines that have been sitting or not used over a few months tend to lose good center rail roller pick up.. . A little 3 in 1 oil applied sparingly to the roller pin does wonders.. I've seen it happen quite a few times.
The Greenbriar seems to have woken up. I can now get it to work in conventional mode. It makes sounds, smoke and moves in conventional mode. I assume I need to make sure it is the only engine on the tracks when I try to recover it. Any other hints about making a recovery and if it doesn't work I guess it needs to be sent to the shop if I want PS-2.
In addition to being the only engine powered on, the recovery must be attempted using a TIU with ID# 1.
This and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!" This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at OGR’s web store! |

One little tip.... The recovery feature does not automatically add the engine, It just says "engine recovered" or no engine to recover and it goes by quickly,, If you missed it , it won't recover the engine again. Once recovered you still have to add the engine the same old way and the engine should add to the lowest available ID
Tip... Leave ID #1`open on the dcs remote. (no engine)
I want to thank everyone for the advice. I finally got the engine back in DCS mode.
Lots of good valid tips. As suggested you could find an MTH tech and have him put the board into his board tester. An MTH tech with the engine in front of him can set you straight on your issue. When an engine acts up, you will have a board issue or a chassis issue. If the board tests good in the board tester you then have a chassis issue to ferrett out. I have a feeling this may fall back on the upgrade person.
