I know this is a mainly O scale forum. Maybe there's some G scalers around?

I've been reading and seeing posts about people repowering their diesels. I have a USA trains SD40-2. I'm wondering if I could use a set of trucks out of an MTH DASH 8? It sounds crazy and they're two different scales. I've seen posts of this exact thing being done. It's already got PS2 inside and I bought a set of chopped up abandoned MTH trucks used. The USA is noisy, eats power and signal, and now has thrown a couple bearing things out.

Has anybody here done this or know about it? The USA's are slightly longer (1/29?). Maybe I could modify the USA's EMD sideframes or get some aftermarket ones? I tried emailing MTH about replacing (trading in and paying for) the plastic truck shells but never got a response. Thanks for any help, Joe

I sure hope Mike makes some different modern diesels soon.

I've done one and that was to fit a pair of MTH 2 axle Dash-8 drive blocks under a USA Trains GP30. It was a bit of work as the MTH drives are taller than the USA's and they pivot in different spots. Ended up having to raise and move the bolster pad in the frame to make the engine sit lower..then that lead to having to re-work the weights in the engine.

USA drives are prone to gears stripping/breaking..I have 3 SD40-2's and 4 PA1's all DCS'd and they all make a lot of noise in the drivetrain area but they're big engines with huge drives.
