Hi OGR Forum,

As I may have mentioned since joining OGR about 9-10 months ago, my current knowledge of Lionel control systems is only from reading. Now I am going soon into operating experience mode as my 24' X 24' layout is built out. I just acquired the Legacy Control and Extension System sets #990 (6-14295) and #993 (6-14294) - but I have never used.

I received some feedback from experienced Lionel users of these control products that for "young" children (my grandkids are ages 4, 6, and 10 years) the CAB-2 Remotes may be at this time for them a little too complicated.

My questions:

- To simplify for my young grandkids and their introduction to remote controller basic usage, can I just acquire and employ 1 or 2 (preferably) Cab-1L Remotes (6-37155) for these younger users?

- If the answer is Yes - Is there any special installation instruction for me to adding to my layout which will use the #990 & #993 once installed for me and other user adults?

Your trusted advice would be greatly appreciated. I hope to hear from the experts out there!

Thank you, Ken

I agree that the Cab 2 remote is probably too complicated for most 4-6 year olds, but maybe okay for the 10 year old with a little help and instructions. You can set a speed limit, also.

Not to duck the question, but have you considered some older, basic Lionel starter trains that have a much simpler remote to get them started ?

Alos, many Lionel engines (both high end and starters) come with Bluetooth capability that they can operate with an iDevice and the free app download. Seems like kids today know how to operate those from birth.

The original CAB 1  remote will not work with a CAB 2 (LEGACY) base , either 990 or 993. They are nearly complete different operating systems using different bit technologies.  A CAB 1L   will work with a  LEGACY base and CAB 2.  However any command locomotive ie TMCC   or LEGACY  can be controlled by any handheld unit.  The main difference is in the amount of features you can access from the different handhelds, with CAB 1  being the least.

At our club we have members that come in with the original gray TMCC CAB 1  handheld and wonder why their engines don't respond.  We give them a CAB 2 and off they go.
