Forumites,

I did a quick search to see if anyone has stated this before but did not see anyone discussing it.

The other day, while reviewing email, I saw a website talking about alternative uses for dryer sheets, cleaning car bumpers, oily pans,  etc.

We had a couple of fresh used ones that had come out of the dryer.  I took a them down to the layout.

I started on things that were dusty and had not been really cleaned for a long time.

I cleaned up an old pw ZW and it regained its old shine and looked better than I recall.  I took it to an old UCS track and cleaned the inside of the track between the rails and the top magnet became gleamed again.

I know it has limitations but it certainly cleaned up a lot of dust on the layout.

Since everyone probably just throws these sheets away, just thought I would suggest this dirt cheap cleaning alternative.

After many years of working in hi-tech manufacturing, I got a good understanding of why its not a good idea to use wipes or cleaners not designed for models, electronics etc.  I use the products in the picture.  If I need a chemical and depending on the application, then either alcohol, electronic contact cleaner, acetone or goo gone.  There are residual substances on dryer sheets that will react over time with bad results.  Remember, its a used dryer sheet, not a clean wipe.20201104_121128

Full disclosure, I do not own any stock in any dryer sheet company.  I just had some old Lionel UCS track that was in a box, wanted to test some couplers and operating cars.  I pulled it out, took a dryer sheet to clean it up and was surprised how much better it looked.  I wiped down the outside of the control switches and it shined up nicely.  The whitened cable became cleaner and much more pliable.

Please do not do anything that you feel is unsafe.  I have not tried it on any electronics but thought if I could easily take years of crude off some of the old equipment I had in a box with sheets you were just throwing away, it might be of interest to you.  I did not try it near any electrical circuit boards or rub hard or long.

Please do not do anything you think is risky or might damage anything, be safe and err on the side of caution.

Here are pictures of the cleaned USC track and control. ucs trackcontrol

I did wipe off the top of my  atlas track in my layout and the sheet cleaned a noticeable amount of dirt on the surface.
