I just received a bunch of used drop ceiling tiles...
Other then building a cliff, what are some other ideas?

Sound proofing glued behind or between drywall. I would not buy them to do that but if ya gots them, then use them.
good idea for sound proofing-
how about scenery?
Well, I guess this counts as "a cliff", but besides the traditional "bedding planes" use of broken layers of ceiling tile, you can also do nice things by carving textures into the back surface of a single piece of tile. The rear rock face in this scene was done that way (i.e., it is a single, vertically-mounted piece of tile). Try carving with a dremel tool.
A friend from Ohio makes viaducts from them.I'll see if he has any photos.

I covered the entire benchtop with acoustic tile - about the same stuff, in order to both cut down on noise and provide a nice sculptable surface for scenery. It helped a lot when I had noisy track (Fastrack).
I'll be the wet blanket. Some older ceiling tiles contain asbestos. There are numerous web sites on the subject.

rogerpete,
Roger if those are the sound suppression ceiling tiles, they are seriously great for running FasTrack on, to eliminate 90% of the sound. Cover your platforms with them, then lay the FasTrack.

Yes, I've done a couple unusual things with ceiling tiles. My viaducts are my favorite.

Please tell us how you do the viaduct. Looks terrific.

I've seen these close up, they are exceptional, and well constructed.
Yes Charlie, we're still friends!

All, I did up a write up on how I do this. It runs 7 pages with pictures and all, Pretty detailed, but if you want a copy, write me off list.

This is a good, well written write up. Thanks Charlie, I see a viaduct in the future...
