Well, I guess this counts as "a cliff", but besides the traditional "bedding planes" use of broken layers of ceiling tile, you can also do nice things by carving textures into the back surface of a single piece of tile.  The rear rock face in this scene was done that way (i.e., it is a single, vertically-mounted piece of tile).   Try carving with a dremel tool.

No reason to be a wet blanket- These were ceiling tiles that I replaced in 2001. They were looking shabby & My FD decided to replace rather than paint.
 
I am loving the ideas, and I see a viaduct in my future!
