Hey Gang,

I am assisting a new forum member in designing a layout with O and S gauge (AC powered) loops. He is interested in using Legacy to control his engines. I believe he can control both gauges simultaneously with Legacy, but I want to check in with you guys to make sure I have my facts straight.

  • If he uses a two handle transformer such as a ZW, would it be best to connect both commons and the Legacy sytem to a bus bar, or should he use a split at the binding post of the Legacy base for each loop?
  • If he uses two transformers (e.g. a CW-80 and Z1000) for each loop of track, and he uses a split at the Legacy base binding post for both loops, could the Legacy system be damaged? If he does need two transformers, I will encourage him to use two of the same.

Thanks in advance for any input.

As long as the transformers are phased, you can pretty much use any two transformers.  It would be pretty tough to damage the Legacy base as you only have a single wire going to it, and that's doubtless isolated inside the base.

There should be no issues at all using Legacy for both sets of tracks.

Note that for transformers like the PW KW or ZW, all the U posts are common inside the transformer, they're on a bus bar.
