Variac Transformer

Since I own one, it has crossed my mind.  There's the chance of accidentally applying more power than is safe that quickly dispelled the idea.  Might be fun to experiment though.

You can use a variac to run your layout--- just power it with an 18 VAC 10A transformer(instead of the "normal" 120VAC)--- Which by the way is how the Right of Way transformer works---

I run two ROW transformers.  I have the outpost on one connected to a DPDT switch.  I can put power through the TIU or throw the switch the other way to power my center rail while using live catenary.  It looks good when the electric engine pulls into a station to stop and have constant lighting in the passenger cars.
