I have two of the original Lionel 153IR controllers that just start a timer after the IR sensor detects an object. The more modern 153IR controllers maintain the signal as long as an object is detected. I prefer the modern type, but I finally found a good use for the older type.
I wired the transformer directly to the power leads of the 153IR controller. I then connected the com1 and NC (Normally Closed) terminals directly to the track. There is no need for any insulated track section at all. Set the 153IR controller where you want the trolley to stop (next to the station) and turn on the power. After a 3 second wait for the 153IR controller to cycle, the trolley will begin moving and stop each time at the station for a set period of time. The sensitivity of the 153IR controller may have to be adjusted and the duration of the trolley stop is also adjustable on the 153IR controller.
So a simple two wire connection from the transformer to the track and a two wire connection from the controller to the track is all that is necessary for trolley operation.
One thing I don't understand is why the 153IR controller doesn't keep recycling while the trolley is in front of the controller, but it does not. Maybe the controller waits for a clear condition in front of the IR sensor before it goes into detection mode again.
Here is the trolley in action:
