Being a Vietnam myself I want to post this for ALL Veterans

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
 Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
 In his exploits with his buddies;
 They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
 His tales became a joke,
 All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
 For a Veteran died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
 For he lived an ordinary,
 Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
 Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
 'Tho a Veteran died today.

 When politicians leave this earth,
 Their bodies lie in state,
 While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
 Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

 Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
 And cons his fellow man?

 Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
 And offers up his life?

 The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
 Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

 While the ordinary Veteran,
 Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
 And perhaps a pension, small.

 It is not the politicians
 With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
 That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
 With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
 With his ever-waffling stand?

Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
 Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
 We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
 That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.

 Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:

 "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
 A VETERAN DIED TODAY."

By A. Lawrence Vaincourt.

REAL HEROES don't wear capes... They wear dog tags.

No, I am not the author.  The poem was sent to me yesterday by a friend of mine who is also a Vietnam Vet.

Since you asked, I did some quick research and found the author.

His name is A. Lawrence Vaincourt.

I have gone back and added his name to my original post.

As I drove to work today, I thought about Government office being closed.  However, I thought more about how many Veterans have to work today in ordinary jobs like mine.  I thought it would be nice and honorable if all employers would offer to veterans this day off from work.  I am not Veteran, but the sacrifice that so many Veterans have made in risking their own lives for this country….at least they deserve to have this day off from work to show a little appreciate for what they have done for our country.   Jim thanks for posting this poem…well said.  Thank you to all the Veterans on this forum who have served our country.

Have some older friends who were in Vietnam. Said it used to irritate them to no end that teachers who most likely had a college deferment and avoided service got Veterans Day off while they all had to work. They could never understand why Govenrment employees got all the extra days off... Sadly 2 of the 'Nam Army vets I knew died of cancer a few years back.

Yesterday, my granddaughter and grandson invited me to their elementary school tribute to Veterans. There were 71 vets, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Irag and Afganistan there. All branches of the services. It was really nice and the major theme was that too often we are too quick to forget what has been sacrificed. I know we weren't real popular when we came home 45 yrs ago, and it really helps to see new generations paying respect.

Thanks to all the Vets from many conflicts over many years and here is to the ones yet to serve.

Salute!!!

Great poem.

I am a Viet Nam veteran also, Navy '69 to '73. It's hard to believe that the amount of Viet Nam Veterans are starting to decrease pretty rapidly as the WWII and Korean vets have been. As part of a title says, "We were soldiers once and young..." Now we are older and grayer. Thank a Veteran next time you see one, it doesn't need to be a holiday.
