Chris, I just watched this on KSL's web site in full screen mode. I played it a few times and even stopped it but I can't tell what was mounted on the truck. They said it was being used by the water treatment plant so I guess it was a pumping truck. Those employees were very lucky to walk away. It is amazing that they couldn't see flashing lights and a big train comming at them.
Solid hit... cut the truck in half! Notice the tandems flying and hitting the relay case after impact...
At least he can't use the "engineer didn't blow the horn" defense on this one.
OK, they didn't show the first part of the video when I looked at it. I only seen the train hitting it, not approaching the track. Thanks, Chris.
Thank heaven the guy with the camera was upstream of the debris flow. Railfanning can be dangerous.
So I take it that popping sound a few seconds before impact was the emergency brake going off?

Correct....big hole 'em.....shoot 'em!!
Oh snap! Photographer had time to pan from truck to train and back to the crossing that truck could not clear in time.
Never try to outrace a train at a crossing says Mr Darwin.
Wood's video shows the Union Pacific train was passing through Wellington with horn blowing and the crossing lights flashing. The driver of the truck told police he didn't see the train.
The driver of the truck should have his license permanently revoked!

Well looky there, another great decision maker.
Human beings have been on this planet in one form or another for roughly 5 million years. Objects of this size traveling towards us have been around for only the last 100-150 years or so. Our brain and our optical system just has not had the time to evolve.
I'm sure the driver saw the train, he just did not comprehend enough to explain. Its an optical illusion. The train looked like it was standing still to the driver from his vantage point. It is the same thing when one looks at a 747 or A380 flying towards; it looks like the plane is just hanging there. It is not until the plane is very close that its velocity can be judged. The brain of a human being cannot comprehend an object that large moving towards it.
The driver looked, he made a judgement call that the train was not moving. Unfortunately it was and the truck got smacked. I'm happy that everyone turned out OK. However, this can happen to anyone at anytime.
But if there is any feeling, any indication that it is not safe, don't do it. Waiting a few minutes for the train would have saved the truck and expensive load. This trucker is a PROFESSION TRUCKER, right?
