While taking a video yesterday, I noticed that the right classification (green) light on my Vision Big Boy was not on. I wasn’t sure if it ever did turn on, but in looking at a video I made in Oct 2016, that light was shining.

Any recommendations on how to fix it; that is, without sending it to Lionel?

Thanks!

Alex

Alex, You will have to remove the upper half of the boiler.  There are four screws securing it, 2 in front and 2 in the rear (they are the ones with the larger heads).  You will need to unplug 4 leads to remove the shell.  In the front are 2 leads, one for class lights and the other for number boards.  I did not observe how either set of led’s were mounted.

Be very careful removing the small connectors, it's easy to pull wires out of them.  You can NOT pull on the wires, you have to work the connector out of the shell.

Unless they're in there a lot different than other Lionel steamers, they just poke through the boiler front into the class light fixture, that's what it looks like.

You're in luck as I just so happen to have mine apart trying to fix it for other reasons, but in so doing I took photos so I'd know how to get it back together.

These are where the screws under the cab are found.

Screws towards the front under the leading engine.

This is where the antenna and cab light are connected.

In this shot you can see the white connector for the smoke stack cover switch just below the speaker baffle.

Now here's the end of interest to you.  There is a white and black connector.  The leads on these are very short and I found I had to take my time to disconnect them.  And with that the boiler top is free.

Here is looking at the boiler top at the wires.

A closer shot with the leads held out of the way.  You'll probably have to remove that screen to get better access to the LEDs.  It's two Philips screws.

Here is a shot of the whole boiler top free.

Thank you, friends!

That is exactly the info I need; including step by step, and detailed pictures (Dan, John, Sinclair). This will be a nice afternoon project, but not today. I have some miniature LED's, but don't know yet if they are the same size. A new set (thx Alex) of LED's is $10.50 plus S&H. For the time being, I will run the Big Boy 'half-class' - after all, they normally run with these lights off, as LAIDOFFSICK mentioned above

Yep. "Classification lights" are just that: they classify a train (not a locomotive) and come in 3 colors:

Red for end of train, backing up. Rare. Red ones on the tender ("markers") if the loco is pushing forward behind the caboose. Not uncommon. On the tender.

Green for there is a second section of a train following this one. Not common.

White/clear indicating that this is an "Extra" (non-scheduled) train. Common on some roads; rare on others.

Off - what these things are most of the time.

Just unplug the other one and you'll be finished.

I don't know about your RR, but on mine there's almost always a second section following the train, as soon as the train makes the complete loop.

My RR is so small that the lead locomotive is also the pusher locomotive.

I have run into this many times.  Remove the LEDs like the guys showed you.  Cut the shrink at the LED and more often than not you will find a bad solder joint than gave out.  Those make a sharp turn when installed.   If you are nervous doing the job, just buy a new harness from Lionel.  I have also seen wires cut when someone plays with the smoke unit.
