So my wife blew my mind and offered to buy me a VL Challenger (Legacy System included) or a new watch for 30th birthday.

Are there any other watch/train collectors out there who have faced a similar dilemma (I use that word loosely)?

On the one hand, I have always wanted a big, scale, articulated steamer. I think the VL version is right up there with the best ever and for sure has the best sound. But I can't help but think it won't be around as long a well made Swiss timepiece.

At the end of the day, I am one lucky son of a gun no matter which way I go.

Decisions, decisions.

It it were me, I'd go with the watch.  First, watches, particularly if the right type, are really cool in their own ways.  And watches are a more personal gift - the type a wife gives a husband or vice-versa (I treasure a Tudor my wife gave me 30 years ago, wearing it now).  Also, you will wear the watch a lot more than you will run the loco - and  of course, you can wear the watch anytime you are running the loco but you can't always run the train while you are wearing the watch . . .

Seriously. I have the same view of Challengers!

Plus, you can't have too many Railroad Grade pocket watches either; like Hamilton 992B, or 950B, or Elgin 23 jewel B.W.Raymond, or ANY Illinois 21 or 23 jewel.

This is an O GUAGE FORUM, not a watch forum, your supposed to be supporting THIS hobby. Let him get watch recommendations over on the watch forum!

Get the engine.  EVERYTHING these days tells us time, cellphone, computer, TV, heck, even the sun and moon can give you some idea what time it is , but if you get the engine, you know what time it is...time to run trains

I have an Omega Seamaster I bought back in 1970-72 for $150.  It's worth a lot more than that now, but I need to get it repaired and that'll cost over 2x what I paid for it.  Not only that, but I'm having a hard time even finding a place that'll fix it.

Great suggestion on the Ball watches Hot Water. There are so many brands out there, sometimes a few just slip my mind. I just wish they made their own movements. However, they sure do tinker with the ETA's.

Seeing as how the new catalog promises a new Mohawk, I think I'll wait until both companies catalogs are released next week. I love NYC steam.

How does Lionel's L2 Mohawk rank in the pantheon of O Gauge NYC steam? Does anyone know if it will be part of a big set again?

Until then, I sure am sitting pretty

Just something to think about.  On a late date night when you and your wife walk out of the bar in the city one thing the guy holding you up at gun point is never going to say:

"...give me all your money, wallet, and jewelry,...all of it...hurry up man....and don't forget that Lionel Vision Line scale Challenger!"

Or I suppose you could get the watch...I'm just sayin....

It depends on what your wife really wants you to have.  If the watch was her idea, go with the watch or you'll never hear the end of it if your Challenger goes haywire.

On the otherhand, the last time I checked, this was not the Rolex forum.  So the obvious answer would be a train over a watch.  Besides, how many watches can you reasonably wear at one given time?  To that point, I do know that you can run multiple trains at once though.

Enjoy whichever you decide to go with and Happy Birthday!!
