Hello all : I am new to the forum and new to Lionel vision line. I just purchased Greyhound challenger for my son. I noticed that I do not see any variable ash pan glow or flickering firebox. I was told by a Lionel tech that he did not think those features are in the greyhounds. Yet the catalog and box indicate they are. Does anyone have a first hand experience with this? Is this true? Thank you both. I appreciate your quick replies. I am currently undecided on DCS or Legacy. I have three Lionel engines (two of which are Vision line) the other just command control. I have purchased MTH DCS but have not opened the box. I have one DCS controlled engine. My question is, can DCS unlock some of the Vision-line features or should I return the DCS and get Legacy. The train dealer near me said that Lionel has Cab 2 on backorder. Mike

You won't be able to access Legacy features like the quilling whistle with DCS or have the same ease of control that the CAB-2 keypad gives you. Frankly I think that if you have Vision Line engines you really need to run them under Legacy to get the most out of the features.

However I fear that the most recent version of the Legacy system is on backorder most places but you might find one on #Bay.

Of course an oil burner has firebox glow! Fire is fire!

Well yes, but it is a bit more difficult to see that "glow" on an oil burning UP Challenger, unless the Fireman is forcing the fire a bit, then the flame-flashes can be seen exiting the air inlet tubes on each side of the firebox. Obviously there is no ash pan on any oil burning steam locomotive.
