Voltage Regulator???

How about a 7806 in the TO-220 package?

The LM317 needs programming resistors to generate a fixed voltage, so it's not pin compatible.

I thought he wanted a 6V regulator, not a 5V one.  Besides, by the time you pay MTH shipping, you can get it almost anywhere far cheaper.

Oh, I may have mis-understood. I thought it was for a MTH smoke unit.

That should do it John.  I figured the LM317 needed something to help set the voltage, just wondering what it would do if no resistor was used in the circuit.

There's a good sized heat sink that goes on the regulator, which I think I have in my parts bin.  My Williams/Samhongsa brass 2-8-2 has the same QSI setup and it has the regulator and heat sink.

If you can find the LM340T-6, it's the same part, Mouser was the only place I found it on a quick search.

The 7806 is the right part, that's what's on the 8-sided board in the 2-8-2.  It was missing from the board on the Weaver 4-6-0 chassis I bought last year, figured the original owner must have had a failure.
