Hello all

Here we have a Voltamp  2" gauge  #2222 middle transitional period  with a high cab and med /later motor circa 1915 .   Voltamp of Baltimore produced various electrical supplies ( motors, meters , novelties , etc )....and late in the year for the Christmas season built electric trains ...1908 -1922 selling out their  steamer and car line to  Boucher of NYC in 1923 .    2" gauge ( 2 rail ) was the standard of American  electric toy trains  beginning in 1896 with Carlisle and Finch , Knapp in 1903, Howard 1904..Voltamp late to the game in 1908 ....   Lionel  advertised their "new" trolley  line introduced very late in 1906  ( steamers and freights to enter the line summer of 1907 )..as 2" ...but of course if one had a ruler    is was 2 1/8" ..... what was to become called "Standard Gauge" ...which at the time had no Standard.    The massively successfully marketing and sales push  of Lionel ... caused the death of 2" ...Howard out by 1908 , Knapp 1912 , C&F 1916  and Voltamp (last in last out) with  the sale to Boucher ....however they still provided service and limited sales  in 2" beyond the sale date .

The #2222 is running on Voltamp  sectional 60" diameter track .... double field motor ...

Cheers Carey

That is a neat engine.  Love seeing stuff like this.  Did you find it that nice or have to do some work on it?

Kind of a separate question, you post so many unique locos, I am curious as to how many need some or a lot of work when you find them or do you target more complete items in the first place?  I kind of take what I can find, but am just curious as to which way has been successful for you.  Thanks for posting this loco, as well as all the others!

Jim Kelly Evans from this forum has a good deal of this type of early American and other tinplate trains.  He doesn't post often any more but I think does author some portion of the Tinplate Times.  Very nice guy too.

Hello all ..thank you for your kind words ... I've been very fortunate to find some wonderful pieces ... the 2222 came out of the recent Maurer auction.   To  get it rolling ...there was a short with the brush holders , rewire , clean ,oil  and add voltage ...off we go .

Each of the early manufactures have their own charm and characteristics....  when I was collection in the 70's ..the only place you ever saw this early stuff was on Ward Kimball's layout .....unfortunately most of this early stuff rarely is shown to the public ... Jim Kelley has done an excellent job with Tin Plate Times web site and facebook page ..to get this early stuff out there for more to see ....  I enjoy sharing the unique ... to show what is out there ... and try to get the pieces to move ... they are all just toys ... and toys like to be played with .   To see a photo or catalog is one thing ...to see it in action ..helps connect the original magic to the piece .

Cheers Carey

Catalog page with 2222 circa 1914 ... note price was about double a Lionel #6 of the same period ....

I'll address the Interurban in a separate posting
