I have long regarded Western Hobbycraft trolleys as the finest 3-rail O gauge trolleys made to date.  I have received the following e-mail from Scott Cameron, Walt's son:

Dear Allan,

I write to you with sadness in reporting that my Father, Walter Cameron, passed away on June 11, 2014.  In the years when he operated Western Hobbycraft, the OGR community was so supportive of his trolley, the steel coil loads, and culvert loads.  Your kind words about his trolley have always made him happy during the past years when his health had deteriorated.
Would you consider mentioning his passing in a future issue of OGR?  His obituary will run in this Sundays papers in Youngstown, OH, Warren, OH, Johnstown, PA, and Cleveland, OH.  We have asked that any gifts be sent to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.  That train brought him great joy as I would take him out for frequent excursions as a break from the confines of the nursing facility.  He almost never took off his CVSR ball cap.

Regards,
Scott Cameron

I've never owned one of his trolleys but thanks to this forum I was aware of how high quality and popular they were. His posts also indicated his enthusiasm for the hobby. Walter's name will join the list of other innovators who have made this hobby great. Rest in peace Walt.

Sad news to hear.  I too am amongst those that remember Walt's prolific involvement in this forum many years ago; he was very proud of his product and as testament to that many have bought his trolleys.  I do also remember him posting about the challenges of owning his company and his conventional trolleys competing against the growing popularity of lower-priced, command-equipped motive power from the competition, in spite of many of those other trolleys were not of the same caliber of detail and scale proportions.  All that, combined with rising production costs and his ongoing health problems just simply wasn't conducive for him to continue on and end production and try to sell his remaining inventory.

He is worthy of being known to leave a mark on the O gauge hobby and for trolley fans/modellers/operators in general.  He certainly will be missed; my condolences go out to his family.

Only my sincerest condolences to Scott and the rest of Walt's family. The trolleys are fantastic.  Recently I have taken an increased interest in trolleys and traction and one only has to spend very little time to figure out the scarcity of high quality, ready to run products out there. Walt took on a tough job at a tough time and I appreciate his contribution.
