I just purchased the prototype .Here are the two side by side They are not the best condition. The regular one runs great. While the prototype won't run. I need to take them apart and clean them up.
Does anyone know what I can do about the motor?

Ah, those sad sad McCoy trolley motors. The zinc alloy frames warp, then the motor is frozen. David Nissen posted links to 3d printable files that use plastic to replace the zinc parts. Seem to work pretty well. He may still be on the board.
Ira Keeler was making a very nice replacement motor, much more sturdy, but he passed away a couple of years ago, so no more of those.

Jim,
I sent David a message using the e-mail in his profile, but have not heard back from him yet.
Steve,
I am answering here as others might be interested in the answer.
I am in the process of sending this information to the OGR 3D Project Catalog. It will include the .STL file to print the motor side frames, pictures, and detailed instructions.
This is more than a simple project and involves pulling a wheel off of an axle, pulling a gear off of the armature, unsoldering wires, breaking apart the zinc sideframe to retrieve the modified screws that is cast into the sideframe that holds the motor together. This also assumes that the brush holders, brushes, and brush springs are still good and that the armature and field are also good.
It will include a detailed procedure for reassembling the motor.
David,
Thanks for the information . I can't imagine how detailed it is to do this.
It will be greatly appreciated.

I started a thread titled "Restoration Techniques" a few month ago, as I was beginning work on a Lionel #10. You don't have to go back very far into this forum to find it. (second page, actually.)
I asked similar questions and got a lot of very helpful tips; you might find some of those tips useful, too.

Looking good so far.
Wow, this "Wabbit" looks to be quite a bit bigger than the 380(?) sitting next to it...

PS: your work area is way too neat!
That's because it's a Lionel 252 0 gauge My layout (disaster) has 0 gauge and Standard gauge mixed.
The Bench was just cleaned a bit. You will see the mess later.

Ah...that makes sense! 🙂
I posted a few days ago (?) about how small the other gauges seem after playing with Standard; your 252 is a perfect example of what I was talking about. 👍

PS: I think your work bench looks fine...
