it's well known that many if not all US toy manufacturers turned their production to either directly supply military items like Lionel or modify their manufacture to more useful items such as Hafner did producing bottle caps.  but for some reason it never occurred to me that German industries might be tasked with similar wartime production even back to The Great War... until now.

this might not be correct, but perusing an upcoming firearm auction i spotted an interesting item labeled as produced by "Bing Brothers"... a "snail drum" magazine made during WWI.

used on the P08 Luger...

and the Bergman MP18 sub-machine gun...

can anyone verify this Bing Brothers as the toy manufacturer Bing Bros?
did Hornby get into the act supplying anything to the UK troops?

curious mind want to know.
cheers...gary

From what I have read, Bing was at least part Jewish and for that reason left Germany in 32-33 timeframe after which BUB assumed what was left. There is some discussion about this in various tinplate toy histories on the net... The component mentioned above was likely made during WWI but I am not at all knowledgeable on the subject. It is certainly a neat unusual piece if you already have an original of that which it is intended to attached to.

From what I have read about toy mfg., Germany was way ahead of the US in metal stamping. Prior to WW I & later 2, the Germans mastered the art of stamping metal parts and shipping these to a central factory for assembly. Started with dolls  and was very successful in WW II. They  parted out airplanes and engines, small arms, even subs. It is an interesting study.
