I read a little while ago that the engineer of the AMTRAK train that missed the curve was caused by the engineer not seeing the speed restriction sign two miles before the curve. They didn't say why he missed the sign.

A new "high speed" line with a 30mph restriction? No PTS on a brand new line with passenger traffic?
You can run a train at 79mph without cab signals, but if you do 80mph, you have to have them.
Sounds like the half assed planning and construction of the line contributed to the situation...

POOR planning/engineering or both?

First it really is NOT a "high speed" line, since maximum allowed speed is only 79 MPH.

Do you mean PTC?

Well, not really. If the overspeed is set to 81 or 82 MPH, then occasionally train speed high be 80 MPH.

Nope, that curve has been there since the NP RR laid the track more than 100 years ago.

Neither. The Engineer was lost!
