My LHS has a Williams By Bachmann Santa Fe Berkshire on the shelf for $200. I asked one of the owners about it and he said it had been dropped and repaired. Is this a good deal or should I consider a different engine? He said it runs great but I could tell that it had been damaged and repaired (bent grab irons and marker lights glued back on pretty solid).

Hello Tom M
I would ask the LHS to test run it while you watch first and also watch the drivers as they go to check for wheel damage or wobbling.

Tom,
Personally, I'd walk away. The price is out of line, on top of the badly repaired damage. If it was damaged that bad on the outside. What about what you could not see? Look around, you'll find one in better condition at a better price.

without question, see it run. I'd have them take the shell off so you can inspect the innards. Unless this is a "have to have engine" I think the price is a bit high for what it is.
I would walk away. You can get a brand new one (maybe not Santa Fe) from Trainland (forum sponsor) for $200.
I agree with the others, why take the risk when you can buy a new one for $200-$250 (Trainworld, Western Depot), depending on the road name.
My experience with WBB steam engines has been less than gratifying (I would contrast that to Williams pre Bachmann).
Given that the Berkshire is a common model, I would find a good Lionel postwar, MPC, LTI, or LLC version. They are plentiful and even the recent conventional classics, which are very nice remakes, are selling here on the forum in your range. A very clean postwar original could also be found in the $250-$500 range, and if cared for that locomotive will outlive you.
Just my .02.
You can get a brand new Scale or semi-scale WBB for $250-$350 on certain websites.....
Not worth $200.00. You can find new ones for less.
I picked up the same engine minus tender for 35 bucks on the Bay. You can find them with tenders for not much more than 100 bucks. Keep shopping.

I'd walk away too. Got a bad feeling just reading what you wrote. I got mine just a few years back from MariosTrains via eBay. Price was good and with a trusted seller like Mario, can't go wrong. My B&O continues to run like a charm.
