Lately, I've been trying to put all those weathering techniques I've read about for years into practice. First up was a MTH 2-6-0, airbrushed and then weathered with chalks. She's in background with an untouched version on the tracks along with a shot of the business end.

I plan on lettering it later- maybe SP, but probably as my freelance line the Peninsula & Ocean.

I also converted an MTH 19th century boxcar to an SP version with some Proto48 decals. The car on the right is what it looked like before.

I'm pretty happy with the way things are coming out and plan to keep trying it out.

More progress on the first locomotives for the Peninsula and Ocean. Moguls 5 and 6 are ready to start hauling local freight.

Both are MTH models. Weathering was done with airbrush, chalks, pastels and the road names are custom Kadee decals.

I found these soft pastels at an art supply store useful for adding coal dust stains and rust.

"and I added real coal to the top of the SP hopper load."

I like the effect that real coal adds. Many years ago an SP coal train derailed near our hose and my kids picked up a few lumps left after the clean up and we crushed them up to make hopper loads. A prototype lump goes a long ways on a model, I still have a couple of chunks left if I need to dress up a coal car.....DaveB
