I have a weaver 2-8-0 (1803LP) currently equipped with TMCC/RS, no speed control and a puffer smoke unit. It is possible to have this upgraded to a PS3 engine? I'm really not crazy on the sounds or operation and it's basically just been sitting. If this can be done, I'd enjoy the model a ton more.

Sure, most locomotives with a DC motor and a flywheel can be upgraded to PS/3. If you want smoke operation, you'd have to install a fan driven smoke unit.

Cool! Could I install an MTH PS1 or 2 smoke unit? That way I'd get great smoke.

I do love MTH ps3, but have you ever though of using and ERR control and sound setup. They likely have a better sound set for that engine. Anyway, either way you go, it will be great

The trouble with ERR is it's still generic to an extent. I'd rather do PS3, more character in my opinion.

Makes sense. I am actually working on a Legacy conversion with Bruk Banister here on the Forum. Its for my Williams J class and it will have the specific N&W 611 sounds. I also just emailed you about sound files.

Sure, I use PS/2 smoke units for my steam upgrades with either PS/3 or TMCC.
Yes you can do the upgrade, but depending on specifics of the brass shell determine what smoke unit can fit, and how to mount. Lot of mechanical work modifying and fitting to install smoke and mount wire harness PCB in the engine. I have not done the weaver 2-8-0, but several 4-6-2. If doing yourself, all the kit parts may not work. Plus you will have to be good with the mechanical mod too. Counterweight needs to be modified to clear the smoke fan motor, on most of the Weavers I have done. G

I've done lots of brass upgrades, both DCS and TMCC. As George says, most of the time there is mechanical fitting involved, especially if you want fan driven smoke. The tether connections are another place where there can be significant fitting at times. Naturally, the old brass stuff also is a lot more fragile than diecast, so just handling it is something that you have to take more care with.
I should have mentioned. This is the die cast version.

I am fairly certain that all the Weaver 2-8-0s are die cast. While it is true a large percentage of Weaver steam is brass they did do a few die-cast locomotives. My 2-8-0 is die cast as well. The box says "Die-Cast Construction/Brass Detail Parts". I believe they also did a Pennsy 0-8-0 in die-cast.
Well, the diecast will be more forgiving in handling, that's for sure. Come to think of it, I did a Williams Consolidation not long ago and it was diecast. Those old brain cells are fading fast!
