Is there no potentiometer anywhere?
On the MTH PS-1 system, reset 6 allows you to lower the prime mover sound. Maybe QSI has something similar.
I just purchased a new in box 4-6-4 Hiawatha and was reading the manuel. On mine the volume control is close to the front trucks of the tender, hard to see. Which cars are you running with it? I now need a set of cars to match it.

I had that engine 15 years ago,so happy I got a good buck bailing on it.The driver wheels painted silver was a major dud, otherwise a nice model.Like"oldcarsrule"says, maybe Manuel will help with figuring out the sound issues.

Maybe try using small caps.
Well of all the Hiawatha's for sound, I say the best sounding Hiawatha is the Weaver Scale Hiawatha Road Number #101 that was in Toy Train Christmas Memories. I'm still hunting and looking for that Hiawatha to this day.
