I'm thinking the Cruise control on our Weaver Little Joe is toast ... how can one tell?

When I start it up it sits there as I turn the "big red dial" slowly until it finally takes off like a rocket.

When I switch the cruise control off, it still acts the same.

Is there some method to use to determine if something isn't set right, or if it's really the cruise control gone bad?

Thanks!!

With the cruise control switched off, it should not do this.

Have you added a Cruise Commander "M" from Electric railroad? They like to have power applied instantly, rather than dialed up slowly.

It sounds like the motor driver is booting up before the radio board does. That tells the motor driver that it is in conventional mode, so it takes off at full speed when given a command to go forward.

This loco used the K-line cruise unit. While a lot of people havent had luck with these units, others have.  I'd take a shot at trying to change the speed steps. For some reason sometimes the 32 step default is buggy.

Setting Speed Steps
32 Steps: DIR, BELL, AUX1, 1 (factory setting)
128 Steps: DIR, BELL, AUX1, 2
256 Steps: DIR, BELL, AUX1, 3

If not cruise commander is probably the best option.

Thanks to you-all for the helpful advice but alas all attempts to breathe life into Little Joe E20 have failed.

The good news is the creator has generously offered to let me send it to them to have it repaired!  If luck holds maybe I can also buy a new set of spare tires ... the ones with which it came have fled the box for unknown places.

Off to FedEx!
