I've got a Weaver light pacific pulling 15 cars on my 2-rail carpet central. It is the 2-rail no-sound version from 8-10 years ago. I was bummed when I first put power to the rails and had no lights. But it runs great in both directions and pulls well, so I've enjoyed the engine.

Something interesting happened tonight. While running in reverse, the train stopped. I throttled down to 0, then throttled back up... The train did not move, but the lights came on! I was thrilled! I throttled back down, then back up... Now the train moved, but no lights. I was able to reproduce this behavior a couple times, but only when running in reverse.

anyone know what's going on?

OMG fellas! I suspected that this might be a DCC issue. Lights coming on at full throttle with no movement felt like a control issue, but these never came with DCC.

I took another look at the box, and I found a post-it note which reads
"Programmed as follows
NCE D408SR
F0 = head/reverse lights
F1 = cab light
F3 = marker lights
Address 2454"

So it looks like I have a DCC engine! Now time to shop for a DCC system! Then figure out how to add sound and smoke.
