Here are two older pictures":

Here is a picture I took last night. I had several other photos planned until I sat on my camera getting ready for the next shot. So I will be camera shopping this week.

Finally, I can contribute some pics while actually being in the US.

Above is a glimpse of the late Tom Snyder's standard gauge layout now residing at the NJ Hirailers Club.

The NJ Hirailers have been invaded by aliens, monsters and dinosaurs. No, not the members! Real monsters! For the upcoming Halloween Themed Open Day this Sunday.

Get along, it promises to be great fun, with Vinnie's monster cooking as well.

Here are some more pics of my layout for those who were curious last weekend. Thanks alot for the compliments. I was originally going to try and do a "four seasons" layout( good call Jeff) but I setted on primarily a  fall layout with with winter beginning in the mountains. A fairly basic track plan 10.5X 16, the "mainstreet area was initially a yard that I removed and extended the mainline out to the perimeter and trade for an inner loop to drop off the reefers at the icing station, alot less track and much more operating fun. I eliminated having to perfect "plain old" ovals. I suppose the "open center is wasted space but I wanted access to all points of the layout for building, viewing and whatever maintenance. I even went as far as to leave the back of the mountain open and covered with removable black felt so I can access the interior for derailments track cleaning etc. My wife painted the mountains on the backdrop and the "cartoony" clouds. I still have most of the scenery to do, obvious by the photos and the areas already "sceniked" still lack utility poles and other details.

Heres a view of the small NYC service yard .

001

The inside passing track( behind "mainstreet") that allows access to the icehouse, the track the k4 is sitting on will be to store extra reefers.
002

Mainlines passing in front of "main street". The pennsylvania switch tower operator is in charge of throwing the mainline switch as well as the two "engine service track switches and the inner track switch not seen in this photo. I have only one switch between the two main lines to make sure getting reefers from the outside track to the icehouse is more work.

004

I put these engine service/ refueling tracks at the front so visitors could get a better look at the locos.
005

Snow comes to the mountains first, and the Christmas tree farm is already "rampnig up". I want to add more trees to this area, it is too sparse.
006

Icey creek that flows out to the ice skating pond.

Some real trains this week. On our way to Myrtle Beach I took a detour and came upon these units sitting at a small station in Chadbourne, NC. Spent a half hour or so just walking around the place taking it all in. Tomorrow is the Grand Strand Model Railroad show. It will be my first time attending this show. What a great way to start York week.

On Tuesday night, my gracious host, Lionel Bill, took me to his club, "Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers", and what a treat. This is a magnificent layout, featuring bold mountain scenery, to great effect. If you ever get an opportunity to visit, you won't regret it.

I have this brown Chapelon pulling the Orient Express in Australia, too. It was nice to see. And check out the trestle bridge, one of the many works of art on this beautiful layout.

Getting ready to start creating 2012 Christmas layout memories

See if you can detect any SUBTLE hints in these pictures that give away that I'm divorced and live in this house by myself

Spare bedroom.  There's 2 single beds and every square inch UNDER them is also filled with train boxes:

PICT0139

The closet in that spare bedroom: all those boxes are rolling stock and you can only see 1/3 of what's in there:

PICT0141

The living room devoid of ALL furniture (see 2 pictures above for some of it).  This is only 1/8 of the total Homasote that I will be using.

PICT0143

The kitchen area.  Tables came from the living room.

PICT0144

My bedroom: track, some of the switches, and transformers:

PICT0145

Spare dresser downstairs.  1/2 of the stuff is upstairs already(see photo 1) and the remaining boxes I'll bring up later on - vehicles, people, houses, etc

PICT0146

My house is rather little so I have to scratch out places to store stuff.  Garage.

PICT0147

Laundry room shelves:

More laundry room shelves

If you didn't get the subtle indicator, it's the lack of a china cupboard

646

My first postwar loco.  I feverishly unpacked it and ran it even before servicing, and it does it all!  Runs strong, reverses, loud whistle and smokes very nicely thank you on mega steam.  Not bad for a loco whose age is at least 54 years, possibly more.  Yes, I know the tender is not the correct one for a 646.

Scott, Sorry to hear about your squashed camera; the image quality of your photos is always very good. What camera was it? I too am camera shopping and am a bit overwhelmed with all the choices. I have always been a Canon user but some new Olympus models are intriguing. Any recommendations?

regards,

Mack

I had a Kodak camera. My wife has an incredible upper end digital Olympus that I would serious consider it cost around $700.00. For me I would rather spend $100.00 for a camera and spend $600.00 on a new train.

Scott, the next time she threatens your trains, take her camera hostage.

Your wife's contribution, her painting..., adds that special touch. There's a distinctive charm to her work.

There's a nice warm visual flavor to your layout.

BTW, I'm seeing a small Grinch figure perched high a top that steep little snow capped mountain(that's painted on the wall); fiendishly, scanning the valley below.

My compliments to you and your wife.

I almost forgot - the rock tunnel is a great feature on your layout. Perfect proportions!

Hi Walt.  I won't repeat all the pictures but...your home looks like a perfect use of living space and functionality to me.  I would say this is a candidate for a feature in, say, Better Homes or House Beautiful  !!

Walt and others in the same situation - don't give up on a wife. When I was dating mine (4 1/2 years ago) she was at my home while I was listing some things on eBay one evening. She asked "Why are you selling your trains? I like trains."

Little did she know that my spare bedroom and basement were FULL and I was 'out of the hobby'.

That was then,  this is now....
