Weekend Photo Fun 12-18-20

Last week, I posted photos of a large warehouse that I had constructed for the city of Altoona. This week, I’m posting pictures of the three smaller structures that are just to the right of the warehouse. The structures are done, but ground cover and details still have to be added:

Morrison’s Doors is a stock DPM structure, ready to go right out of the box. It’s very nice and comes pre-weathered. All I need to do to it is change that sign to one with a font more appropriate for the 1940's-50's. To its right is a structure built from two walls of an Ameritowne structure kit, with the third small wall to the right being pieced together out of a few scraps of some previously kitbashed structures. And to the far right is the back half of a Walther’s “Nicole’s Java Hut” kit. I had previously cut off the front inch to use in the town of Port Royal, and one day it struck me to use the back of it to build 2/3 of a structure to be used as a background façade structure. Building it at an angle like this widens the structure by almost 50% (also true for the Ameritowne structure) giving you more bang for the buck.

The final image shows the shipping and receiving area of the “General American Signal” warehouse that I posted pictures of last week. The concrete pavement is now installed and weathered but remaining work consists of adding a few figures and weathering the REA truck, especially those chrome wheels that look like mirrors in the photo.

When this area is finished, the city of Altoona will be complete and I will be moving on to another section of the layout.

Photos of fun for this fine weekend!   The Free State Junction Railway celebrates the holiday season with it's annual Christmas trains loaded with toys and food for the less fortunate.  A Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad SW9 heads up the east bound Nutcracker Special and a pair of Baldwin R16 demonstrators heads up the west bound Candy Cane Special.   Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy holiday season!!!  Be safe = Be well! REA boxcar load of fresh cut Christmas trees arrive on the team track and are being unloaded.  

O Tannenbaum O Tannenbaum!

Long Island Rail Road ALCo RS-3 #1553 with “Dashing Dan” logo is a K-Line model shown here running conventionally on my 12’-by-8’ layout and pulling MTH Premier LIRR passenger cars “Islip” and “Montauk.” I don’t run this engine often but it runs well whenever I do. I have a set of K-Line two-tone blue “Dashing Dan” passenger cars that go with this engine but they are pulled by the MTH LIRR G-5s steam engine that is always on my layout and can be glimpsed in the video. The “Islip” and “Montauk” actually should be run behind the G-5s, so I have things reversed. As a youngster, I regularly rode the LIRR from Merrick through Jamaica to New York Penn Station. The view of Manhattan when passing through Sunnyside Yard in Queens was (and still is) magnificent. What I would like to have is a set of LIRR double-decker passenger cars. They were so much fun to ride on.

My kid lives over in Albany, Jim, and he reported similar numbers. He's been living up there since 2007, and he said this is the most he can remember in a single storm.

We occasionally get a freak snowstorm here on the layout:

Goin' small.

After finishing my latest build project, my son asked if I would build his N scale kit from Blair Line, the Joe's Cabin kit; see Joe's Cabin & Outhouse. Holy smokes, darn near went cross-eyed building it. I used a pin to apply the white glue to most of it. Here it is done and positioned on his N scale layout.

For perspective, this is the outhouse in my hand.

The upside, my son really likes the cabin. Downside, he wants me to build more N scale kits. Eeeek

Christmas 2020

Merry Christmas everyone!

Main layout update 2020.  I extended my layout to accommodate my Carnival expansion.  I am also going to have a lower level for building a kids display.  I also completed my lumber area.

Preparing to create 2020 Christmas Layout memories

These are actually about 3 weeks old when I w as still doing wiring.  I DESPISE this task!!!  But, I am really neat though   Actually, these 2 areas will be hidden so there's really no reason to be concerned with neatness.  As long as everything works.

New York Central kind of a day...

This arrived at my home this morning.  FedEx brought the Lionel 120th anniversary caboose, which I ordered in August.  It is a Northeast style caboose.  I believe this is my first of this design in O scale.  

Thomas the Tank Engine, Annie and Clarabelle all seemed to like the blue and orange colors at the end of my freight train.

Both the box and the catalog description said the car would have interior decoration and figures inside.  There are none.  There is a light, though.

This caboose adds even more color to my already colorful train of LCCA and LRRC christmas boxcars.

My tree and some of the village for 2020.  

I have the 3-6 shift at the Modular layout today.

This is the 1st item I ever bought from Charlie Ro......the 1983 Lionel 20th Century Ltd. I will run it today in honor of Charlie's memory.....

Lou - Actually those photos were from 2018.  Forgot to mention that in my post.   This year I'm opting not to put up a tree.... exterior decorations only ... with a smattering of  decorations indoors which are unreachable by Barney.   I think Barney would have a field day with a tree and a layout underneath it.  He tends to get into everything and chew away as a puppy will do.  I have yet to let him into my train room.  Perhaps I'll introduce him to the train room after the new year sets in.
