It's time for WEEKEND PHOTO FUN!

Here is a picture of last weekend's project; new train shelves in my son's room.

Can anyone here figure out why smoke unit isn't working.

Bought this on the Dash-Trains auction-who in their right mind would have painted two #18 passenger cars look like this? They are now down to bare metal.

Let's see your pictures.

Scott - Many thanks from ALL of US here for your dedication to starting this thread each Friday. As many have expressed - this is a favorite and displays a wealth of visual delights for us all!

Here's a couple of shots of the area below the towering Hellgate Bridge with the waterfall into the gorge. There is an incline line (yellow girder) behind the bridge and a level lower line that are difficult to see from most angles.

There was a thread this week about motivation for train purchases. This photo reminds me of my personal motivation. Who doesn't like beautiful passenger cars? What's not to like here? You have color, great road names, and simply beautiful passenger cars, most in the photo, K-Lines.

Decided to run the Alton limited this week -

NH 232 on the upper level -

scored a bunch of sweet cheap deals off the bay this past week -

Just a note - for everyone ( myself included) that complain about the insane prices of new trains, not one of these cars cost me more than 15$. Most have them have the boxes as well. Deals are out there. The used market is a GREAT place to pick up cars or engines if you are in to traditional style trains. It allows you to grow your roster & not break the bank doing so.

This one was a little more than 15$, but I always wanted this. I remember it on my Uncle's layout when I was a kid

Lorenzo's new favorite thing in the train room is the milk car -

This is what happens when train time is over - my wife says I created a monster, lol

Westbound NS 17G has a set of helpers on the rear as they pass Pandora Road in Latrobe, PA - 1/23/15

The same helpers returning eastbound to Altoona, seen in Derry, PA -

With DST in effect, we were able to go the NS line that's 1 mile from our house & catch 337 in good light again this past Sunday -

Nice job Scott, I use the same molding for shelves too, makes life a little easier.

Paul

What moulding is that? Some sort of beaded casing? I'm thinking of building some train shelves too.

For years I was buying molding from Home Depot and the molding was getting much thinner and more expensive. I found this white molding in the window and door molding section at Lowes. It was under $6.00 for 7 feet. The finished side looks like this;

When you flip it over you will see this;

It's thicker than the Home Depot stuff and the white sides look nice as well.

This is my first pic posted to WEEKEND PHOTO FUN after years of waiting to have something remotely worth posting.  I have to apologize for the quality of the pic, however:  I don’t own a decent camera and wouldn’t know how to use it if I did.

Anyway:  It’s not too long after sunrise on a day in early October, 1935.  The Frisco local from Springfield, MO, to Fort Smith, AR, has just crossed the White River bridge that the road shares with the MoPac system.  The engineer, J.T. Nagle, whistles for the macadamized grade crossing as Ten-wheeler #719 drifts lazily into the curve at the Wrenchmueller farm just before hitting Notch Junction where the Mopac and Frisco mains come together to cross the bridge.  In the distance, you can see the headlight of the Texas Eagle behind T&P 4-8-2 #907 emerging from the portal of Big Indian Tunnel which runs under the plateau on top of which sits the town of Marmaros.  You can see the back wall of the narrow gauge Frisco Silver Dollar line’s square “roundhouse” through the upper girders of the Warren Truss bridge over the White.

There is a great deal of work still to be done, but I’m finally at a point where I can show some scenes from selected angles without looking too bad.

A few photos from just a few minutes ago, all taken on my iPhone (which has a pretty decent camera) so they aren't perfect.

Tomorrow is my annual FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) recertification, annual training, testing and annual rules refresh. A very long day. We spend about four hours in the morning in the classroom going over the rulebook front to back, an hour for lunch, and all afternoon is spent working hands on in the rail yard demonstrating competency. After all that is done, tests are given. All required to stay current with the rulebook and federal regulations.

From the layout:

Running out of room again...not exactly the worst problem to have. Just trying to NOT have to figure out yet another spot for the LGB set (top shelf). It is so big, I generally can't find a good place to put it. It seems like it is always in the way.

Catoctin Mountain Trains is closing on March 31. I was up there last week and picked up a few things. I will make one or two more trips. Last visit I picked up this die-cast MTH bridge for my upper loop. Some serious weight to this thing!

A look at my yard (if you want to call it that....)

The MTH Bump - and - Go trolley in action.

My "original" Lionel set was running on the inner loop - a 4-4-2 Pennsylvania Flyer Lionel set. Engine, air whistle tender, gondola, boxcar and caboose. I overheated the engine pulling three MTH Railking cars that were standard plastic with diecast trucks and couplers. Lionel claims this engine can pull 12 cars. Whoever thinks that is accurate is way off IMO. Regardless, it does a great job pulling a couple of all-plastic cars with plastic trucks and couplers. Paul at CMT has a number of MPC/older Lionel 0-27 cars for sale since he is closing. I may pick one or two up to put behind it.

Amtrak was on the outer loop.

unnamed

The B&O F3 freight was on the upper loop.

The final bridge support pieces arrived!

They are shown here extended to support an 8' temporary bridge mockup (final GN Rock Island, WA bridge main span is a ways off, and will be 8' 8").

The temporary bridge will simply be 2 pieces of 2"x2"x1/8" aluminum angle stock with a plywood deck joining them.

The car shown is sitting at the expected final rail height of 87", lowest point of the supports in 81.5".

Mockup bridge (bottom at approximately same height as final model, which extends 18" upward). Car at final rail height.
