This week I also worked on the interior of another station on the layout. I added people and benches.

Ive been working on a new building to add to my layout.  This will be a wholesale tire distributor with a lighted and detailed interior.  The building is Clever Models cardstock prints with added strip wood.  The doors came from other Clever prints.  The loading dock and interior floor are coffee stirring sticks.  i am getting photos printed for the interior.  The track will be street level to allow trucks to use the same dock.  The first door on the right was removed and windows added and that will be the detailed office.  i know it’s considered old school but I’m old too!   I’m very into the stuff that was available and popular when I was a kid and teenager.  I still have plans for structures that were featured in Boy’s Life magazine.  I still have add scenery too after the concrete is poured between the rails. It has been a fun build. Thank you.

It's Tower Time!

From east to west here's View Tower at Duncannon. This is built from a Koerber kit:

Next is Mifflin Tower, a classic kit made by Quality Craft (actually a model of Jacks tower to the west):

Finally, here is Rose Tower at Altoona. This is a preassembled Walthers kit which I carefully repainted using a fine brush:

All the towers are set at interlockings or in the case of Rose, at a yard throat. I added relay cases with cable drops, air tanks, and pneumatic piping which are all used to control and signal the interlockings/yard throat as on the prototype.  All are weathered and have finished interiors.

The MTH Premier model of New Haven Railroad EF-4 #303 (20-5508-1) was listed in the 2000 Volume 1 catalog and delivered with PS1 in February 2000 at MSRP $329.95. I run my PS1 engines with a BCR.

The New Haven Railroad filed for bankruptcy in 1961 at a time when its electric freight motors were beyond economical repair but electric motive power was necessary to maintain freight service under the catenary between Cedar Hill (New Haven), Oak Point Yard (Bronx, New York) and Bay Ridge Yard in Brooklyn. In 1963, the New Haven trustees purchased twelve surplus rectifier freight electrics from the Norfolk & Western Railway for a total of $300,000. They had cost $267,710 each when new at GE in 1956 and 1957. Designated class EF-4 and known as “bricks,” they had 3,300 horsepower and were very successful on the New Haven. Usually run in pairs, they hauled hundred-car trains. Eleven were still in operation when the New Haven was merged into Penn Central in 1969 and ten lasted into the 1976 formation of Conrail. They ran until Conrail terminated electric freight operations in 1981.

I just got back my two Lionel Legacy K4 engines from Pat (harmonyards).  He did the gear box fix on both engines for me, which apparently was really needed.  See his post at K4 gear box fix .

I put them on the layout for a test run, and they ran perfectly.  Thanks Pat.

Early MTH Berkshire in Erie.

Note the darkened side rods and 'plain' black rimmed drivers on this one. Most steamers I've had have some type of steel or white painted rims. Interesting look...

Train show weekend was last week and lots happened.

1st, we got a few donations over the last few weeks.....

A C&O Flyer which is a great runner......

....and, then, a very nice, uncommon uncataloged PostWar set......

The Lionel Halloween General Set.....The engine motor needs a little servicing and I need to get both a cap for the smokestack and new gates/horses for the flat car.

A really great donation!

We also got a boxed American Flyer set. I always get a kick out of looking at the newspaper wrapping......and this is no exception....check out the appliance ads!

My Flyer experts tell me that this is from a little earlier in the 50s.

We have the set box but I was told that the set number stamping ink has a tendency to fade. The interior has what looks like original cardboard packing.

The train show, itself, was a lot of fun. The Virginia Train Collectors do a great job and it was well attended. About 80 tables. Three layouts in the show itself.....which included our 12x15 layout. Our main layout (21x47) was in another location in the shopping mall and a "parking lot train" was provided for rides to and from our location (it was barely a 10 minute walk if you did not want to wait for the train).

Peter, Love all the General Sets.

When I picked up my original PW General Set, the horse car was also missing stakes and horses. I found some great repros from a guy who sells them. Think it must have been on the auction site. The fencing is yellow which makes a great color contrast with the brown flat car.

Peter, great modular layout and thanks for including the beautiful GM&O boxcars. I have a couple or so train sets given to me each year. I clean & repair them and donate them for children’s Christmas gifts. Even though they are not new the charities always love getting nostalgic train sets.

that's a shame that the interior isn't more visible.  I detailed 2 of my buildings and was so disappoointed when I realized that it would take a special effort to see inside.

Weathered this Lionel Legacy NW2 for a pal. I don’t think I’m that great at diesel weathering. The cooler is a resin print I whipped up tonight. I know it’s more appropriate for later Union engines but I couldn’t resist.

That is a great job!  I’m getting ready to paint one of my All nation NW2’s just like it.  Did you use the K4 decals?  I’m building one of the short cabooses and painting it yellow to match.  What is the box that you made that mounts in front of the cab?  I saw them in several pics but did not know what they were.

Thanks Malcolm! This is a stock Lionel from 2015 or so. The box on legs I believe is some kind of sand box. The resin printed one in the pic is broken so I’m trying a different way of making the print so it’s more durable. The owner can decide how he wants to mount it if I can figure it out! The roof walk was provided by the owner.
