Saturday I started on the new Jurassic World layout at the VMT.

I decided that my volcano was too short and had to buy some extra Styrofoam and ground cover to make it larger.

I swore to myself that I would not post any more photos of my engine servicing facility for a while, but yesterday I was playing around with my cell phone camera trying to get some night shots, and came up with this one, which I figured was worth sharing on the Forum. Here a worker keeps tabs on things by the ash hoist. The roundhouse and boiler house are lit up in the background shortly after the sun has set in Altoona.

I broke down and bought one of those cell phone camera lens kits.... it's not bad.  This is a fisheye lens that captures the entire layout!    It was $30 so it was cheap but it works ok.

Very nice! My old phone had a Panoramic selection, seems the new ones have lost that option.

Peter, is it a quiz?, did you change hats?

As we were operating at my Eola Yard we discovered that in the hurry to get the yard up and running we didn't provide any refueling options. So the MOW department of the Milwaukee Road quickly added a diesel fuel tank, a water refilling stand, and the waiting F-7's were able to get serviced for their next run. They also added a bumper to prevent engines running off the end of the track.

I see that already a pile of ties was dropped on the ground and other items are sure to soon follow. The yard and train crews are now upset that there is no where for them to get out of the weather and have coffee. Hopefully it won't take too long for something to get built.

This weekend's photo fun as at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. Some grandkids visited as we were setting up so of course they got to run a train. We hope more grandchildren will visit on Saturday, show runs that day 10-4.   Other photos show some of the scenery and trains, including the statues in Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials.

wood pioneer [4)

My wooden model of the "Pioneer", the first locomotive of the Galena and Chicago Union Ry., a predecessor of the Chicago & North Western. I picked it up at a local memorabilia show many years ago. I assume it was a sale item or premium at one of the big fairs here (the 1893 Columbian Exposition, the 1933 Century of Progress or the 1948-1949 Chicago Railroad Fair), because the locomotive was on display at all three. It is now on display at the Chicago History Museum.
