It's too early for Weekend Photo Fun, but I am starting it now anyway,

Last week I didn't run trains and I didn't take train pictures. My wife had surgery today and that I has taken all of my time. So as I looked at old pictures I realized that I started the multi-gauge layout one year ago. So I have found some pictures to show the 1 year evolution  of the layout.

It started with a old O-Gauge train layout that the Roanoke Valley Model Railroad club wanted to get rid of.

Within a few weeks of starting the club had an open house so I put a snow cover over the layout for the event.

It's been a while since I posted any images of my current project, the town of Port Royal. Last month, I finally dropped the module with the core of the town in place, and now it's wired up.  So now I'm working on the foreground between Second Street and the tracks. This is where the station is located. It has a long way to go, but here are a few photos. The first is a color shot, the second is B&W, and the third is of the prototype taken from the same angle from atop the Route 75 bridge which spans the tracks.

Finally getting around to building the Atlas O ice house and icing platform that I've had for many snows. Started with the ice house first, because it looked easier for one. Plus there's not too much painting I wanted to do on it.

The biggest effect I wanted to achieve was to lightly airbush the stark white building with a fine spray of black grime / soot. This structure would be adjacent to the tracks during the steam-era, exposed to a stready stream of smoke and ash.IMG_1977

To finish this project off, I'm waiting on delivery of some led gooseneck lamps to install over the two doorways, and the Union Ice sign.

In the meantime, I've started on the icing platform. Yeah, that's going to be fun!

Wonder what these guys are doing in Virginia.

Quite possibly, they were the successful bidders on maintenance of an industrial spur.  Those privately-owned tracks don't typically get the same level of inspection and maintenance as railroad-owned auxiliary tracks.  Things usually remain static until there's a track-caused derailment on the private spur, and then the railroad will typically require the owner to fix the track, usually meaning replacing a few ties or putting in some gauge rods.  Other industrial track maintenance might include repairing an inside (i.e., not connected to the common carrier railroad) switch or fixing problems with unsafe footing for railroad employees who set out and pick up cars there.

Private railroad contractors do this work at rates much lower than that charged by the railroad, and the owner of a private track is entitled to have the work done by any entity of its choice, as long as the result is satisfactory.

Good Morning Everyone. Scott there's one of the only things more important than trains...family! But I found you can join the two and it can be a source of joy and in this particular case healing as one has already stated.

Here's a little snapshot I took of this new scene on the layout. Thought it was nice  how the morning sun glistened off of it and the birds were chirping, kind of serene.
