Good morning, I just got in from a 600+ mile business trip so before I call it quits for the evening let's start Weekend Photo Fun.

Here are pictures I took at the VMT on Wednesday.

At the Whippany Railway Museum in Whippany, New Jersey, model trains are an key element in telling the story of New Jersey railroading down through the years. Much of the equipment on display is O scale.  In fact, a centerpiece in the space within the interior of the old freight house is an operating O gauge layout.

Here are two videos of my new Lionel Legacy PRR GP9# 7048 leading two Legacy RS11s and one non powered RS11 pulling a mixed freight train. The new GP9 looks, sounds, smokes and runs great. Alex M just got finished working on one of the RS11s. Although not on the video the squealing brake sounds on these engines is terrific.

Enjoying all the various posts nice collection this week. Especially thanks for sharing the New Jersey Railway Museum collections, very well done display.

I do a number of shows each year with a kids theme of the model trains and am trying to simplify the set up process. I have had the controls mounted on the fence for the various Thomas LionChief engines. They have been pretty reliable for the many shows that I have done, the kids love being able to run the trains. I picked up some more LionChief sets from one of our forum sponsors on a clearance sale, was able get them a bit cheaper without the track.  I am going to swap on the Toby Toy body to the one engine and do a couple of other Thomas engines on the sets I picked up.  So now can have 10 different LionChief engines with controls on the fence for kids to run.  I have not liked the Lionel FasTrack for the noise. I picked up a couple of different lots of used MTH Realtrack, with the solid rails it has significantly less noise then the FasTrack is much stronger and is resistant to rusting as I plan to leave the track boards stored in the unheated garage between shows.

I did up two 4x8 foot track boards to be light weight can handle with one person if necessary and easy to slide out of the trailer just hook up the wires and be ready to run. Used Foam sheets, foam glue to hold the light weight green outdoor carpet nice grass look to it. Used 1/2 54 and 42 curves on the outside loop to get it fit the board, with the outside rails isolated from each other wired it so I can run scale 2 rail trains on the outside loops or with 3 rail trains. Middle loop 54/42/31 inch curves and inside the 31. Used #5; 1 inch screws they grip a bit through the carpet to hold the track in alignment. The set up is not to loud should make for more kids to be able to run trains at the show, the little kids love it.

The "Hands on" approach, great job

Decided my tinplate railroad was missing something. Then it hit me: where is the army? Since I already had a (small) army base online, would make sense to have some cars for it. Only problem with that is that Lionel and Marx, the only companies that made tinplate military trains, made ones that were collectible. This put them outside of my budget. So yesterday I spent a fair bit of the afternoon designing a Troop Sleeper on the computer, then printed it on card stock and assembled it to mock up what the end result would be if I got it printed on sheet metal. I plan to use trucks on the actual ones instead of the Marx frame, but that was what I had on hand. What do y'all think?

Peter,

The Woolworths store brings back so many memories.  You are doing a first rate job on a first rate River Leaf model!  Is that your back yard you are working in with the nice view of the lake?  We had a lake in our backyard at one time, but sold and moved to a lesser valued property to help us with tuition costs.   It was all good!

my MTH B&O 4-4-0 set came on this week and she is a beauty. I love the gold trim on the wheels and watching those big drivers turn slowly.

Its not a prototypical Royal Blue but I'll give MTH some artistic license here because she is a beauty.  I tried my hand at a pacing video using a flatcar and my iPhone - not exactly Speilburg's work but I hope you enjoy.

I've been buying PRR MoW equipment as part of my plan to build a work train.  They are the standard cars K-Line, MTH, Lionel and Weaver have produced over the years.  Most of them are yellow, a paint scheme not used until the mid-50s so I will need to paint them gray to fit in my late 40s era.  I've also been collecting images of PRR MoW cars to help me put together a realistic train.  Unfortunately, to make a truly realistic work train I made need to modify some cars or even scratch build some of them.  Here is what I mean.

Heavy-duty freelance 2-8-8-2; still PS1, but awaiting ERR Cruise Commander installation (I have it, but the mood must be right) and a decal or two:

This is one engine that will never run out of sand:

It's a re-scaled RK 2-8-8-2 - certain details removed or replaced with larger or enlarged (see cylinders and N&W J-style cab) versions:
