One of my few Heavyweight sets, The Observation Car this week is from a set of MTH Union Pacific cars from the mid to late nineties. Though the set is nearly 20 years old, it has a lot of class.
A few things going on around the layout...
The updated downtown lineup is complete. I still need to add some vehicles and such.
Been planting some trees, painted the steel bridge black, a good view of the old coal tower in its new spot, and what appears to be a MASSIVE space death ray on the bridge to nowhere! Those must be some big aliens! Luckily my Border Patrol guys must have gotten them. Now how to get rid of that huge ray gun looking weapon.
A rarely seen view looking west towards the new motorcycle shop. I was getting those two auburn trees in the forground really. It added some nice color to the layout!
The new motorcycle shop surrounded by bikes! I don't know what happened in the lower left of this picture. No no, your OTHER left. My guess is the mounted police and some motorcycle riders must have all decided to take a nap?
You can see the new number boards on my Challenger in the foreground. I haven't added the numbers yet but thats coming!
And the new number boards on the UP 844 FEF are on thanks to Allan (aka C&O Allie)! It is the imperial version that came without the number boards but it really needs them!
And here is a great before and after adding the number boards to the 30-1599-1
And the Challenger gettings its boards.
It's a gray and misty Friday morning. The commuters are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next MBTA train for the trip south into Boston.
The photos posted are a cut above this week--thanks for sharing. Opened or closed, that's one huge coupler on my reefer. Might try putting Kadee's on one end of two cars in hopes they run on my track.
The NMRA annual convention starts this weekend in Portland. A special event was held for Railfan’s with a collection of historic Southern Pacific power in historic paint schemes, and special excursions for attending convention attendees. I was line side today to photograph this historic run with vintage equipment. Photos posted below, click on each photo for a larger view.
The excursion featured host 4449 GS-4 Southern Pacific Daylight steam engine. This engine’s home is in Portland a short ways from the convention at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.
http://www.orhf.org/oregon-rai...locomotives/sp-4449/
The 2nd engine was the Southern Pacific E9 6051 with a daylight paint scheme from the California State Railroad Museum.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Pacific_6051
The 3rd engine was the SD9 #5472 Southern Pacific Black Widow paint scheme, this engine is from the Niles Canyon Railway near Sacramento. This engine has to hurry back at the end of the week it is running on August 30th at the Niles Canyon Railway on “Black Widow Day”, check out the museums website for details. (Yes I know the model in the photos is not an SD9 but I got it for $150 at an estate sale and repainted it the way I wanted it for my railway! Was new and not run at all so it is my pretend SD9 for my historic train! It pulls great read on)
The 4th engine is Southern Pacific F7A #6304 painted in the Black Widow paint scheme. This engine was a feature lead engine on a 2005 Trains Unlimited special excursion, many photos and details on this website;
http://www.trainweb.org/chris/nrhsexpress.html
The staff wanted a good looking train and as a complete SP passenger trainset was not available they were able to secure a good length train of 8 California Zephyr cars shining in the sun, with 4 dome car’s. Dome seats were sold at a premium giving railfan’s a stunning view of classic power at the front of the train.
Hope you enjoy this historic excursion train.
On my railway I enjoy the colors of the Southern Pacific, I have ridden on SP steam engine 4449 on many excursions with many photos. So picked up a scale copy 2 rail MTH version. Excellent engine but with the heavy tenders does not pull much of a train on my railway.
I saw the E9 SP Weaver shell at a model rail show picked it up and was going to power it but for now I used a Williams’s frame and dummy scale trucks.
The scale SD45 I picked up at an estate sale through our model rail club for only $150 MTH 3 rail, a really good deal, so I picked up the proto 3-2 scale wheel conversion for it for scale wheels. It will have enough power as a pusher with the 4449 to pull a good sized train now. It needed a paint job, I was able to find some pin striping tape and Micro Scale decals and with a good bit of masking I repainted it to the stunning Black Widow scheme to match the engine I have seen at the Niles Canyon railway. It is my pretend SD7 #5472. I posted this and the 4th engine before/after decals last week on the weekend photofun. As well I painted up an old Atlas F9 with the Black widow paint and swapped in some axles with split gears and cut the gears off so it rolls along as a dummy.
The passenger set is the old K-Line CZ cars they actually came with scale wheels when I picked up the set for a good discount, so works well with my 2 rail scale 4 engine power set. Perhaps in the future when I get enough 2 rail Scale track laid down on my layout, I can use this power set to pull a long string of my Bill board reefers for a colorful train.
As promised - here are some pics of the new layout - I snapped them w/ my i Phone, so forgive the quality
Next steps would be to finish off the shelves in the front ( plan to do that this weekend), put a skirt up around the layout & finish all the painting. Once that is done, I can have the new floor installed.
I'm sure you guys think I'm nuts to move all this stuff, but there's a reason behind all the insanity - just can't share it as of yet
The kids are ready to run some trains!

A 2014 Christmas layout memory
A couple of weeks ago I posted night scenes shot from the right front corner. This week shows how the layout looked left front corner.

Thank you, Mike! I completed this car this week. I'm still using rather inexpensive Weaver and "old" Atlas cars to practice different weathering techniques. Add some die-cast trucks & couplers and some interior weighting to these cars and they look pretty good and run well, too! Although not nearly up to SIRT's level, his work has been a huge inspiration in getting me to try weathering in general, and certain techniques in particular.
Joe, are you running 2 rails?
Andre.

Andre.
No, Andre...not yet anyway! What you see in my photos is a 2-rail diorama I built for photography purposes only. However, now that I've started to add Kadee's to some of my freight cars, you never know. I may ultimately end up with one less rail!!

Warning!!
I started in the same way, installing kadee, scale wheels and then track! is just a matter of time.
Well the Coal dump is designed for 2 rials and 3 rails so you are save!!
Andre.
What a vast array of wonderful photos. Well done everyone.
Here's a video from last Saturday that I thought you guys would like. How many trains are running?
Thanks
Mr. Muffins
looks like 10
Here is picture's of my Menard's O Scale B&O Boxcar. I got this today and i am very impressed with it. Its very nice car and heavy and detailed a little.

Sweet Brian! Love that picture.
Beautiful lighting and great choice of RR.....

Haven't you posted some great weathered D&H engine pictures already? Did someone else weather them?
( I'm guessing he's being humble here!)
Question: What's better than the California Zephyr?
Answer: Two California Zephyrs. One on the left is Atlas and the one on the right is K-Line.

Art, which finish do you prefer?
Carl - Not too long ago I would have said the shinier K-Line finish. But the Atlas finish has been growing on me and with their superb attention to details, I have been won over to the Atlas version. I still like the K-Line cars a lot, but Atlas has done a beautiful job.
